Yeah well I've seen great results both ways. We can speculate all day which is best, but can't know without some actual head to head comparisons.

The ohmatic monotub tek came out in 2006 going by his thread on shroomery. Ohm had a growlog using a mono in 2005.

i ran unmodded in 2005-2006. started off just doing trays inside unmodded totes.

Was unmodded in 01, used a big pot with a clear plastic domed lid, to avoid dealing with a dripshield. Ha.

Every unmodified tubs sub/spawn/prep has been done as a normal mono lol. You could do a hundred comparisons real easy with the search

I guarantee that someone has used a brick of coir and 5q of spawn with a hole drilled mono.

We measure yield based on amount of spawn put in. And by those metrics all tubs are equal in the hands of a competent grower. 2oz per quart of spawn first flush is pretty much the bar these days. And 1oz per quart at the least what you should expect from MS
