After some help from a few members here I have a few jars of healthy grains ready to go.
Due to not being able to get any dehydrated horse manure I was wondering about an alternative substrate.

I have a compost mix that's just finished composting, it consists of coffee grounds(one third part), fresh lawn clippings (one third part), and straw(one third part), plus an additional 2% gypsum.

If I wanted to use this for growing my cubes, what tweaks should I make to it considering I only have virmiculite and additional gypsum on hand.

Is this possible to work with(monotub),if so how should I go about this?
I can provide pictures of the substrate if needed.

My suggestion is go get some coir. Its relatively inexpensive and readily available most places. No use in trying to reinvent the wheel. If using compost is a must then I would still suggest getting some coir to mix with the compost. Good luck. I personally use straight coir with much success.

Yes unfortunately I'm home bound with an injury at the moment and ACC says I'm not allowed to drive for three weeks.

I'm just trying to work with what I've got until I'm well again.

Is it possible to work with what I've got?
What should I do to have the best chance of success with these materials?

I could order choir online but that would take around a week to arrive and I don't want to risk consolidated grains.

I think the larger risk is using some shit substrate. Order the coir. The grains will be fine.

So asides from potential for contamination, are there any serious nutritional or other deficits with the mixture described?
If any, how could they be remedied?

If one chose to work with this does it have potential to work?

I'm not looking for any garentees, however I do have alot of this mushroom compost available.

I appreciate the advice.

I would think the lawn clippings and coffee grounds would create high nitrogen wouldn't it ? I haven't fucked around in awhile so I could be wrong but I mean wasting time experimenting is just wasting time .. you can get ecoearth 3 pack for 5.99 plus horse shit is free ... if you have clean spawn why chance using shit sub as munch said

Decomposing organic material is good for mushrooms and most plants, but usually when they are outside. Not saying that it won't work but the more stuff that you add the more likely you are to run into trouble. I'm sure there will be plenty of trace nutrients in the compost, but the vast majority are from the grain.

That's fine, I'm content with taking the risk as I have another batch already underway.
I'm not going to be overly disappointed if it gets fucked up.

I guess the last thing would be should I add, virmiculite to increase the fluffyness of the mixture or would this likely have an adequate consistentcy?

I think before I tried some home-made concoction that would most likely be too nutrient rich and cause contamination issues, I'd just run your healthy spawn with no bulk substrate.

There is enough nutrients in your grain to grow your mushrooms. Substrate is just to hold moisture. Give your grains a good soak and dump 'em in a shoebox or small tub. You'll still get plenty of fruit.

After a flush, soak again.

Just grains? That wont fruit well. U have to atleast add some kind of casing doing that.

Casing with even straight verm will certainly help drastically. Definitely still produce fruit with straight grain. Better than fucking the whole grow over with some sketchy substrate.

Yea true. I would never do just grains tho, u get wayyyyyyy better yield by spending a couple bucks on substrate.

Dude even compostsd manure from home depot works straight outta the bag. Id say if his compost is dont correctly it would work fine, especially if he pasturizes it correctly

For sure. I've experimented with straight unpasteurized peat, hydrated with cold tap water, and got fruit. Not as good as pasteurized coir, but it worked.

My main rule of thumb growing shrooms is "follow the path of least contamination." Even top fruiting jars is more productive than spawning to fucked over bulk.

U can experimebt with the compost. But i would get coir fir now so u can learn how it should look/feel and all that. Im sure ur compost would work. People just dont wanna see u lose everything.
