manure or compost
    #777646 - 07/26/02 04:31 AM (22 years, 10 months ago)

im having trouble deciding between store bought Cow manure and Scotts 3:1 compost. Which one would yeild more? ive just heard a lot of people say compost is not very good, then ive heard people say the bagged manure isn't that great either. i dont have access to the real stuff.
Also, i read on some site that compost doesn't have to be pasturized if it was composted correctly and the temp did not exceed like 160. should i pasturize Scotts compost? (for indoors)

Compost is like a total balanced dinner for mushrooms. It has Nitrogen, Carbohydrataes, . Manure is mostly composed of nitrogen and sometimes spent carbohydrates( its already been digested once or in a cows case, several times). Compost has the total package and hasnt been used yet, it even contains benificial minerals that stmulate growth like linoleic acid that stimulates yeilds.Plus when properly cooked, the compost naturally kills all the fungal competitors and bacteria harmful to mycelia growth. Manure works, Compost works, but it always helps to have added benefits. Its like having a complete dinner, and a dessert. bluhoney

Go with the Scotts 3-1 if you are going to buy the manure... if you have fresh manure and let it dry, then they will both work. but scotts 3-1 is prolly the best store bought that you can get.
