Well.... This sucks, black spots where inoculated?

So I checked the jars I inoculated last Thursday night and ugh....  Bad news.  I pulled out a jar and saw a white spot and was really happy, until i checked more thoroughly and checked the other jars as well.  The spots where I injected are black spots, they look like mold obviously.  Based on all research there bad.


Okay so 1st inoc. try was failure, well I'm giving up.  So I tried to find some answers but I wasn't very lucky.  I don't have other jars so I need these.  I'm going to dump them outside with gloves, put them in a bag and bring them in to wash them and then boil them in water.  That should be sufficient right?  I have another syringe with PES Amazonian spores so I'll be using those.  I got to make some substrate tho.  Obviously somehow it wasn't sterile enough when I inoculated the jars, I'm positive of that.



So I'm a noob haven't grown anything like this before any tips on how I should restart.  I'm going to make a glove box for next time but I need to clean these jars first and make new substrate.  I want to make the brown rice, vermiculite, and flour recipe one that seems easy to make.  I don't have a pressure cooker and can't get one.    Does that sound good?  Or should I do something else.  I know I can do this if I can just get them inoculated right

Sucks that your grow went south.  A couple of pointers:

- If by a glovebox you mean a box with actual gloves attached to it that seal the box, then you should convert it into a SAB (basically rip the gloves off). Read Bodhisatta's SAB tek to know how it works and how to make one.

- Without a pressure cooker, you're limited to PF-tek grows. These use cakes made from brown rice flour and vermiculite. Here's a recent guide on PF-tek.

- Finally, if you're worried about your inoculation causing contamination, tell us a bit more about how you inoculated. Did you flame-sterilize the needle? Did you use alcohol wipes to cool the needle? (you shouldn't), etc.

I cleaned a room that we don't use and turned off the air so everything was still.  I did flame the needle but not until it had a red glow or anything and did between each jar.  I did wipe it the alcohol pad after I flamed it.  There was a small carpet in the room which maybe could have screwed me?  I did the inoculating in a bin on a wood surface.  I did this cause everyone was saying not to use the oven method.  I was wearing gloves as well.

I was actually just watching these!!!  There's parts on youtube, like making substrate and inoculating the jars.  I'm going to make the substrate like he did with the brown rice flower.  I think I just wasn't using a sterile enough place.  I think I thought it was clean but didn't realize or think about little particles in the air actually contaminating them.  I didn't think it would be that touchy.

^^^BAM! Right there.  Flame the needle until red hot between each jar.  NEVER wipe it with alcohol after it has been flamed sterilized!  Flame > alcohol.  You basically recontaminated the needle by wiping it.

Hopefully that was the only mistake you made.  According to how you describe you procedure, that's all I can tell that you did wrong.

That guide above is great!!!  I'm going to use it this time around and do it step by step exactly. 


About the jars tho will it be okay if I dump them outside, wash them and bring them back in and boil them in water?  That will clean them completely right so I can use them again?

Got any pictures? Are you absolutely positive it's not clumped spores? Anything other than the mycelium of choice is bad and should be scrapped IMO... Dumping outside and washing with soap and warm water will suffice,  anything lingering will be sterilized in the next PC cycle

I just wash them like normal dishes with normal dish soap. I've never had a problem. :shrug:

it might be hard to see in one or 2 of them but one picture has some growth but on the other side there is a black spot.  I was a little heavy injecting the spores in as the needle was getting clogged from the substrate.  Trying to unclog it I used a bit more then I wanted to it was a little frustrating.

Bro man. I just picked up this hobby 4 or 5 months ago. I have been in your shoes. Do not worry. If you are in it to learn how to do it and are able to read, you can learn. I started Here then went to RR's Let's grow mushrooms. This is not a "trip with your friends in a week" kind of thing. You will make mistakes, you will learn, and you will grow. Stick with it broman
