Anyone remember who tried this with expanded clay pellets?  I can vaguely recall thinking how that was a cool idea at the time, but I can't remember ifit worked out for them.  If I remember correctly, they soaked them in a nutrient solution and used them as "spawn balls".  My memory of this is very faint.

Just as conjecture, I don't see why it wouldn't fruit without being cased.  Agar pucks fruit all on their own.

Had that thought last month when throwing out some flowers. Would probably melt into a goop puddle in the PC cycle. _edit- nver mind cannot read today. :lmafo: "substrate"

Reminds me of when people used to grow on rolls of paper towels. Fill the cardboard inner roll with spawn and let er rip.

A quick report on the mashed bag. It is already recovering, I should be able to have enough to take a good pic tomorrow. Looking like growth is exploding all over the bag. This could still all blow up in my face but I’m having a good feeling about it.

Also purchased some more material. It’s not cheap so I sure hope it lasts for enough runs to be worthwhile. That will also be a pretty major test.

All of our best wishes are for your experiment in this, i'm certain.  Hopefully this scientific whilst hands on approach will continue to inspire many growers to take chances, whether here on the forums or just in everyday reality.

Pasty, may I ask what exactly that stuff is?  Perhaps you've already mentioned it, but the last thing I remember reading is something akin to "absorbant material".  If you wish to not digress, I understand, but the curiosity is mounting.

Could spawn to a tub and layer it by folding the towel in a vertical zig zag stack with sub in between.

Are you happy with the moisture? Would you use the same amount of water next time?

No, I did mean as a 'substrate' for spawn, similar to how PastyWhyte is using a towel (if it is actually a towel).

From what I gather, floral foam is a phenolic foam so it shouldn't melt at 121 °C. Perhaps the capillary structure will be compromised due to expanding gasses. I'm guessing steam might have a hard time reaching the inner structures of the foam, so I'd definitely recommend a long PC-cycle. Hell, I might even try it myself.
