What's the typical grain spawn recover time after inoculation into substrate

What's the typical rye grain spawn recover time after inoculation into the substrate? I've noticed with grain jars after shaking in 24 hours the grain is about 1/2 covered and in 48 hours it's fully covered in mycelium, but after I mixed grain spawn into a substrate it seems to take longer.
I imagine the recover time of grain spawn could tell a lot about the health of the substrate and spawn, but I don't know what's to be expected yet, so this information isn't telling me anything yet.
I use trays covered with clear plastic wrap on top with micropore tape covering air holes and a wadded up newspaper on top to cut down on the effects of any draft that might happen, so I can easily inspect the substrate when needed.
-------------------- A bit expensive but the largest clear tote I've found. Great if you want a large SGFC that can easily do both trays and cakes. If you decide to go all out on a SGFC, be sure to get coarse perlite. It keeps it cleaner and allows better FAE and humidity.

Not sure if this answers your question or not, but I've noticed in the past that the wetter the substrate the longer it takes my grains to bounce back. Sometimes in trying to squeeze as much moisture into the first flush as I can, I end up shooting myself in the foot.
I've since been trying to go just a bit dryer initially (especially when using manure)and dunking after colonized and it seems to work better/faster for me. Seems to get back to work in a few days after mixing.

Here is a timeline of grains from a spawn bag recovering on agar.
Grain on the left side of the dish is not rehydrated, the grain on the right has been.
They are from the same isolate.
Hope this helps

Thanks all,
So a properly hydrated, non-contaminated, mixed, not layered spawn has mycelium recovery on the top grains in 24 hours or less typically?
I have yet to have this in any of my attempts. I see growth on the top grain in about 48 hours if at all, but substrate moisture levels have been kicking me in the ass...I guess. If these trays fail, I'm putting my foot down and going to do the cookie cutter spec that Frank talks about, but one thing that that's kept me from doing that other than I don't need that much substrate is my Eco-Earth bricks (3 pack) all seem to be different sizes. Possibly just separation of the coir rather than different amounts of coir? Wish I could weigh the brick.
I have 1 non-dunked spawn tray and 2 dunked spawn trays on this attempt 24 hours post inoculation. I've made it a bit wetter than my previous attempts so I have a little more hope, but I would like the top grains to be telling me something.

They should show fuzziness on the top within 24-48 hours of being spawned to the bulk substrate.
If your grains are not recovering, suspect bacteria in your spawn jars.
Too wet a substrate should not stunt the initial recovery phase but rather slow the process of mycelium moving from the grains to the sub.
For your next set of jars, do this: break them up at 100% colonization, don't remove the lid. Let them be and see if they recover in 24-48 hours.
If they look splotchy or recover slowly, they are contam'd with bacteria (which can hide really well sometimes).
And for the coir bricks, don't worry about specifics ever.
They all vary and they all work great. With one brick of eco earth (I have 40 of those 3-packs right now ) and 2 quarts verm, you should be able to get a 3-4" substrate in a modestly-sized tub no problem.
