The contrast makes it easier to spot bacteria. So far there is none despite the short cycle.

Maybe I missed it, but how long did you PC it? I reckon one of the advantages of a synthetic substrate would be the low spore count.

I PC’d it for 110 min at 15 psi. I normally would do a bag of grain that size for at least 3 hours or more if the sterilizer was really jam packed. Media in this form is essentially liquid and has nearly zero R value compared to grain. Hell even vermiculite is used as an insulator. This is like sterilizing a giant bag of agar.

Omg, that made me think of fiberglass insulation for some reason... maybe fiberglass is another usable substance, if something for water retention is added.

I considered fibreglass but shit doesn’t hold up to well to moisture.

It would be a bitch with holding water. Abd probably impossible to powderize verm and get it distributed throughout the fiberglass.

I’m not using verm but I agree it’s not a good choice. I like the material I did use so far but further testing is being conducted.

Great, sounds promising!

I know you're keeping the recipe under wraps (lol) for the moment, but anything you could say on the energy density of this substrate? I mean, spawn usually has nutrition to spare, but it would be pretty cool to get an estimate on the Joules or calories per liter or gram of spawn and compare it to grain jars.

Love coming back on here just to check on everyone and finding pasty doing crazy shit as always, Nice to see your having some good progress in this experiment. Hope it ends up being reusable as that would be awesome. This year alone i tried and faild with about 20 experiments so its gonna be nice to see some success before the year is up.

Some updates. Bag 2 which was mashed is doing well, heavy colonization on the sides and filling in everywhere else nicely.



Because of how well bag 2 did I decided to mash bag 1. After two goes at mashing these I had an idea for some tweaks that could be done to facilitate that better. Learning as I go here.



Going to run a few more of these here soon. Thinking of making some LI or LC. Have recipe and material alterations that I’m making. Pretty excited for the next run.

Well we got some recovery on bag 1 already, but the real story today is bag 2. It’s getting pretty close, other than the bottom where it’s jammed against the bag. I’m gonna be watching to see if the blue food colour gets eaten, that should tell me it’s ready... I hope.



Might try flipping the sub in the bag, should be pretty easy to do. Maybe in a few days.
