Identification please
    #25619052 -

Found these on fresh laid sod at a new construction site in South Florida. The stems turned more of a teal/greenish blues color when bruised. The spore print is jet black.

Looks like psilocybe cubensis to me.

That's what I thought too but the gills look grayish.

That spore print looks purple-black to me - maybe Stropharia? Do you have pics of the other parts of the mushroom i.e. stem and gills? Or an in-situ photo?

I misplaced the stems. Had a veil purple/black on one side white on the bottom.

I know the sod farms use cow manure to fertilize the sod fields.

I went to their house this morning to give an estimate and there were tons of them in the yard. Picked these 2 and the exterminator rounds the corner and sprayed a whole patch.

All I could do was smile and say good morning as I grit my teeth. Lol

By 'sod' I take it you mean 'turf' like they use to lay new lawns?

Could we at least see the gills? Though I'm not sure we can positively ID them without the stems.

In South Florida they use old cow pastures to grow sod (turf). They commonly use to cow manure to fertilize the sod fields then it gets stripped cut and sent to someone's lawn.

What was it that made you think these are Psilocybe cubensis? I'm not trying to be contrary or anything, just genuinely interested. But that spore print looks purple-black to me; I don't see it as brownish at all. And he said he found it on grass, albeit possibly manured grass, but I thought it only grew directly on dung - is this a misconception?

Bruising, dark purple spore print, cap color, the environment (I assumed there was some sort of manure used in the sod). It was just an educated guess really but it all matched up.

Oh and yes they can grow on other stuff. It is just very common to see them on dung. It seems like it is almost always found in nature growing on something that at least has some dung in it.

What psi said.

The bruising is pretty clear on the small cap.

I'd say probably cubes but you should have kept the stems intact if you want help with ID. I've found them growing in grass where there's a lot of run off from dung.

A user once posted the most massive patch of cubensis I've ever seen and they were growing in woodchips. There obviously was some manure or something mixed in there but it was pretty damn cool.

With new construction booking in South Florida there is fresh sod everywhere. I do estimates and have come across a couple patches of these growing in the sod. The sod farms are located near lake O where cows use to graze and they turned them into sod fields. Where I got these 2 there was probably 30 popping up but once I picked these 2 the exterminator pulled up and started spraying the lawn and sprayed a bunch of them.

Ha the big "O" is actually my home town! I can verify this as I've seen cubensis growing there in woodchips(obvioulsy manure mixed in) lawns with fresh sod, bank flower beds, damn near anywhere they use manure based fertilizer
