I usually ask something like the OP question to the interviewer, all for work positions with privately owned companies. I've heard some pretty beating around the bush type answers from some of them which revealved some weaknesses in their company. Never resulted in anything bad impressions

I heard some good advice that you should give a real weakness, but one that is irrelevant to the actual job and has nothing to do with your qualifications. So if your job is engineering, you wouldn't say my math skills are my greatest weakness, but since engineering is not a very social job you could say that you often feel that you are too reserved when socially interacting. On the flip side, if your job requires social skills you wouldn't say that but rather say that math is your greatest weakness if you know that math skills aren't really necessary for the job.

I do like the answer of just saying something like chocolate cake or potato chips though.
