What are some interesting and/or pretty yet hardy plants that a beginner could cultivate indoors? I’m looking into living decorations and I’ve been mostly interested perrinial plants. I’m most interested in bonsai, bamboo and cacti so far but I think those would be better suited outdoors from my understanding. I bought a bonsai recently for my gf and some lucky bamboo for myself. Is that practical for someone interested in growing real bamboo outside or getting into bonsai more seriously?

I’d really like to find some Peruvian torch and some L Williamsii along with another bonsai.
I’m really trying to prepare for an outdoor garden once I move and I need some experience.

You can grow anything you want, most plants aren't particularly difficult, it's just a matter of trial and error until you find what they like. Peruvian torch and lophophora williamsii are both quite easy from seed once you get the hang of it. A small CFL or LED light is plenty when they're seedlings. Just sow the seeds on top of the soil (don't bury them), spray until wet, then keep them sealed in a ziploc bag or humidity chamber under the light. If the light is too far away the seedlings will grow all stretched out, and if it's too close they will turn reddish/purple so it's easy to tell where the light works best.

As for bonsais I have a few but don't know all that much about them. I believe you have to remove the plant from the pot and trim the roots once in a while, maybe every couple years, and then repot it with fresher soil.

It all depends what you find interesting, but I personally like to grow peppers, cannabis, cacti, other ethnobotanical plants such as klip dagga, kratom, etc. Kratom is actually a little trickier than most plants since it seems to need constant humidity, but other than that it seems alright.

Yeah, I’ve done a vegetable garden before. I enjoyed it but it was a very large garden and I did all the work. I grew frustrated with it after a few months out in the 100degree Alabama sun, lol.

I think I’m most interested in bonsai, cacti, and bamboo right now. I would grow cannabis but it’s too hard to conceal and I don’t even like smoking it anymore, lol. It’s still an awesome plant though.

Well growing cacti/succulents from seed is not too hard and is kind of addictive, you can get pretty much any kind of cactus seed from places in Germany and Sweden, and there's also a really well known place in New Mexico. As for bamboo I just tried sprouting some seeds of phyllostachys edulis without much success, might just have to wait another couple of weeks though. Some of my bonsais were started from wild maple seedlings that popped up around my backyard, it's good practice and doesn't cost anything (other than pots and soil). Don't know what you can find in North Carolina but surely there's some seedlings around somewhere. I'll be trying to grow tobacco next spring too, it'd be nice to have a homegrown supply even though I don't smoke all that much. If you're looking to bolster your cactus collection there is a lot of online shops that will ship to you, and usually it's not too expensive (depending on what you order). Bamboo is easy to grow outside but I'd keep it confined to a big pot or else it will take over your whole property

Thank you for your reply, I never even considered tobacco and I smoke a tobacco pipe all the time. Thanks again, I will start looking for seedlings too then. I think it’s probably a bad time to try with a cold winter approaching, I may have to wait until this summer.

After work I will do some more research!

During the outdoor growing seasons tobacco is as easy or easier than most vegetables to grow, but drying/curing takes a while and I've never done it myself. I did grow a really big plant one time but didn't take the time to process it. They take up a bit of space but it's a good beginner plant to grow

Do you wanna do bonsai traditionally or not? I am currently growing avocado a bit similar to bonsai in the sense that I am keeping it small and training it but definitely not like wanting to make a miniature version of the real thing.. it would be extremely unsuitable for that.

Anyway, to grow Trichocereus (such as peruvian torch), you really need a lot of sunlight cause it will get really complicated and expensive if you wanna grow that artificially.
With Lophophora you will still want artificial lighting but it is actually pretty doable with weaker light though of course they will grow slower.

You can just browse through cacti and succulent species to see what is really interesting to you. I'm trying to grow baobab for example - again: it's not turning into a miniature of the real thing but I still think it's cool.

If you wanna grow especially decorative succulents maybe look into mutants?

    Mutants are cool but you might run into the same problem with light requirements that trichocereus would have. I don't know how hot or cold North Carolina gets but you could probably keep them outdoors about half of the year, fall/winter might be a little trickier. Yeah bonsai can be done in many ways, I'm trying to grow miniature trees in the tiny shallow ceramic pots but I don't really know what I'm doing yet. Good luck with your baobab, I had a nice seedling for a year or so but got distracted and let it dry out or freeze or something. These days I'm a lot more careful with my plants though

    I guess I kind of overlooked in the opening post that you were looking for mainly indoor plants at the moment. There are some plants that do quite well with minimal lighting indoors and look nice: dracaenas (same genus as lucky bamboo, but there's many types that resemble palm trees), sansieveria, air plants will do OK in a window I think, many others but those are some common ones that a lot of garden centres would carry. Other than watering once in a while they're super easy to grow

    Gardening has turned into a lifestyle for me. Everyday there is something to do. I dig it. Don't grow so much you can't keep up with all of them.

    Same here, it's a lifestyle and also turning into a career for me (for now it's just small ebay sales but I plan to create my own website some day). The 'don't grow too much' is good advice but I don't always follow it, I've got something like 50 types of cacti seedlings in the works right now (among probably 100 other kinds of plants I'm raising). Recently created a couple new indoor grow spaces, so that increased my space a bit but it's filling up rapidly. And yeah if you have any more questions please ask, I'm not the most knowledgeable grower (especially here on this forum) but I'll do what I can (and probably get corrected by the plant masters, that's a good way to learn too though)

    Sorry I haven’t been answering, been working a lot!

    I do want to do traditional bonsai. I can do some of the growing outdoors but obviously now isn’t the season and I would only be able to visit said plants occasionally as they would be on the other part of our property away from the livestock.
