Florida "Blue Meanie" wild cube
    #25511161 -

I know there is a debate as to what people call "Blue Meanies". IMO they are both correct, having seen with my own eyes why the wild cube variety is named this. I thought it may be intretesting to show the differences here, and perhaps help some of you who aren't so familiar for the reason of all the confusion to get some insight.

One blue meanie is a cultivated variety, commercially available for spore prints, etc. The other is a wild variety of P. Cubensis found in the southeast United States.

On a walk through my yard today, I found two wildly different varieties of P. Cubensis. One is a typical southeastern United States P. Cubensis, very textbook, almost visibly identical to a Golden Teacher just with the naked eye. The other is noticably different the moment you see it. You can see the similarities that identify it as a cube, as well, but the subtlties aren't hard to notice. In the pics below, the two with conical caps aren't as mature, obviously, but you can still see many of the different traits present. The biggest difference visually is the IMMEDIATE blue bruising. VERY blue, and no joke, instantly changes color when cut/broken. Some other differences to notice with the naked eye with blue Meanies, as opposed to a typical wild cube are as follows...blue Meanies have: a very uniform stem, a FLAT cap on top when fully mature, the gills curve at the edge to form a rounded edge under the cap, and a very pronounced, immediately noticable purple spore deposit in a halo shape around the outer ring on top of the cap of fully mature fruits. Sometimes the bruise may take a green tint on un-cut, only bruised stem flesh where perhaps you simply squeezed a little too hard, for example. Also, wild fl blue meanies resemble a PE in strength. 1g is a good base point for dosage.

Two are typical "wild florida cube variety" and one is "wild florida blue meanie"

Those are some really nice looking cubes. The midmost one looks like it lacks spore production.

In my experience 'blue meanies' is mostly used in Australia to describe Panaeolus (Copelandia) cyanescens.

Me, I'll always prefer "super blue paddy pumpers".

Blue meanies has always been a reference to Panaeolus Cyanescens in my book and many others books evidently.
Where did you hear or come up with Blue meanies as a nickname for a type of cubensis?

It was sold and or traded around as a spore print of cubensis for quite some time

A cube is a cube.

Blue Meanie is a marketing name. They are still Psilocybe cubensis.

Blue Meanie is also a common name used in Australia for Panaeolus cyanescens.

It is also used in New Zealand as a common name for Psilocybe aucklandiae

Right I was just referring to where the nickname came from.

It's a local thing. Like I said...there are your run of the mill average wild cubes, and then there are wild cube 'blue meanies'.

Thank you, I forgot to mention the p. cyan use of the name blue meanie in Australia and other places nearby there. This is exactly why I started this thread, though...to highlight differences, though they carry the same name.

The term we are looking for is idiom.

ive never once heard of a cu emsis being referred to as blue meanie even here in ga.  its either cubensis, or pan cyans, pan cyans are what ive always heard were blue meanies.  qhat youre referring to is just the spores covering to outer edge, which you can see is purple, not blue.  much like how peiple confuses stropharia for cubes this are notorious for turing purple around the margin of the caps its just spores

nope. not all wild cubes do this here. it's consistent...if they turn blue instantly and have the purple spore halo they are a 1g dose. there are other fully mature wild cubes here that don't blue as easily, don't have a halo spore deposit and are a 2g dose.

our climates are very different. saying ga doesn't have them doesn't prove they don't exist where i live, like 3 hours from the fl/ga line

Its just confusing to give something a name that already applies to a different species (panaleous cyanescens), which grows in the same region and is, in fact at least twice as strong as cubes... It seems like whoever started using this terminology was confusing things they had heard about cyans and decided that these strong cubes were "blue meanies".... A surprising number of people mistakenky believe that all active mushrooms are cubes, since that is the only thing 95% of users ever see or consume.

Many people also seem to think that cultivated strains of cubes apply to wild cubes - not true - in the wild there are no strains - those are purely a result of domestication and selective propagation. That isnt to say that some specimens can be a lot stronger than others depeding on various environmental and genetic factors. More intense bluing can sometimes be an indicator of that, although the blueing effect is caused by the breakdown of psilocin, so the more carefully you handle them and minimize it, the better... But presumably if theres more psilocin present, more will be breaking down.

That's not necessarily true, Wild cubensis picked from Texas east to the big bend in Florida is called psilocybe cubensis Gulf coast strain.  Tampa area is treasure coast,  palm city Florida has purple mystic, but they are all psilocybe cubensis.

thank you, doc. well put.

this is exactly my point. this area has "blue meanie" growing wild. it's just a sub-variety of cubensis, the same way all the cultivars traded publicly are. the prints i've given away in the trade thread as "wild florida cubes" are the local "blue meanie" cube variety.

if i had a microscope i would hapoily show a spore slide of each. i'm interested to know if they really are different varieties, or just an off-shoot of the same  variety. it would be interesting if these were a hybrid of gulf & treasure coast.

I’ve always known “blue meanies” to be slang for panaeolus/copelandia cyanescens.  I’d imagine a cube strain called blue meanies is a marketing scheme because pan cyans are known to be significantly more potent than cubes, which could easily confuse someone who didn’t know the difference.

lol yeah, the local old hippies around here all banded together to come up with a marketing scheme for a local cubensis very rarely sold on the market. that's just one of the most absurd things i've ever heard

seems much more plausible to think that someone back before there was a market for such things as spore prints named them, and the name stuck.

this is exactly the type of ridiculous conversation that pisses off the old heads who actually know because they were there....so they stay away and never tell us. the point is, it's a local variety. i have no idea why anyone needs to start speculating about greed and foul play over a f*cking mushroom variety. i didn't start this thread to point fingers and accuse anyone. damn!!!!

Well, because there was a lot of that, especially in the early days of cubensis cultivation. Just look at B+, it was advertised as the bestest possible mushroom because it was supposedly a hybrid between cubensis and azurescens (and that just because in one test P. azurescens came out as 10X stronger than cubensis). Today, you can easily discover on the internet that that is a blatant lie. But 20 or 30 years ago, people who didn't know anything about mushrooms could easily fall for that, especially if they saw a picture of a "B+" with slightly pointy cap, similar to azurescenses.
With Blue meanie variety it was somewhat different, here they played on name association with Panaeolus cyanescens. People talked about how "blue meanies" were the strongest, meaning Panaeolus cyanescens, and the vendors wanted to cash in on that. They didn't come up with the name, just (ab)used it.
That said, your mushrooms are beautiful, and nobody is accusing you of scamming or anything, but the point is that those marketing gimmicks were very prevalent among spore vendors until just a couple of years ago, and the less reputable vendors are still using them today.
Enjoy you wild Florida blue meanies, they look beautiful and very tasty! :super:
