what type of target are you using?  bag type?  sometimes you can mate a piece of rigid foam to the back, but you should probably just invest in a better one if you see yourself sticking with this hobby.

i'm glad you're enjoying it and working toward more skill.  it really can be a relaxing and centering activity, calming and focusing the mind.  i loved to shoot before i blew out my shoulder.  everything from ready-made and homemade recurves to a compound i inherited when my bother died.

i pulled that bow out last fall and tried shooting a couple times after checking out a buddy's new bow...that old thing of mine is set at ~70# draw weight with only ~50% letoff and shoots about 100 ft/s slower than modern bows.  at full draw you're holding around 35# and it's a motherfucker.  i harvested about 20 deer with that bow which is about 10X less than he did before he died.

my buddy's new bow shoots at 300 ft/s, is 70# draw, and has 80% letoff so you're only holding around 14# at full draw.  the sound it makes compared to mine is like a mouse fart VS a firecracker.

anyway, rambling, maybe look into the foam block type of targets. you'll pay around $55 to $85 for a good one, but it will probably outlast your bow.

The target I've got is a large styrofoam block. I'll have to look into another target soon. I got it because it's big so I didn't have to worry about missing so much.

I'm pretty weak, after 40-50 arrows I notice my arm start to tremble. I'm shooting a light bow, only 25lbs.

It's a 25lb recurve bow, 62".

I got a target too! And 6 feather arrows!

I used to own a rifle but gave it to my brother after having some suicidal thoughts involving it. I don't hunt and got the rifle for target shooting, but never did much of it.

Fucking YES!!!

Now I want a bow...

I'll have to settle for darts for now.  God damn you...

Go for it!

I was waiting for my dog to be groomed and I walked next door to a Dick's sporting goods, but they were phasing out of archery and only had junior compound bows. I ordered a bow but it was going to take a week to be delivered, so I stopped and bought another one at a sporting goods store a couple days later because I couldn't wait and wanted to start shooting.

My only issue at the moment is finding places to shoot, being on the road in an RV.

My brother made this bow out of PVC pipe and fiber glass rods last weekend and I was visiting. He used type III nylon for the bowstring. I was surprised how well it worked, we were hitting apples off of cans from 50 meters out.

must be a thin block, not a cube?

there are the black foam blocks that aren't styrofoam but a different type.  an arrow from a 25# recurve won't pass through.  hell, it might bounce off if shot from farther than about 25m

I'm unsure what you're unsure at. Not far enough distance to be taken seriously? Too far for a novice? Who wastes good apples like that?

The styrofoam block is maybe 10 inches thick, it's just cheap material, think a styrofoam cup. I think I have an idea of what sort of foam you're talking about, more of a rubber type material.

I think shooting apples at 50 meters with a homemade PVC bow is sorta hard to believe, imo.

50m is p far, especially for a homemade recurve and such a tiny target.

but yeah, i did think who wastes perfectly good apples but realized you didn't say perfectly good apples, just apples.

Pfft, just my luck. This is the second time I was told not to shoot my bow in a state park. What's the deal? Is it that big a fucking deal? I'm out in the middle of a field with no one within 100 yards.

Whatever. At least I got to shoot a couple dozen or so. Stepped out to 30 paces and was getting ready to set some more toothpicks when two park rangers came and ran me off.

This sucks. Guess it's back to watching TV and playing phone games.

:justfuck:

My ex gf left a nice hand carved pacific yew wood bow designed after the kalapuya native americans from my area. It needs a new string soon but other than that it is pretty cool. Not much of a range but I could get a turkey or a quail at 20 yards with some practice. I couldn't imagine trying to use one on a deer or a human. It would be like a bb gun. I'm deadly accurate and have range with an atlatl, so I really don't understand why they traded the atlatl for the bow and didn't use both. Maybe they did but everything I have read says otherwise, and my own archaeological studies from the willamette valley confirm this, with the atlatl points found in the older sediments than the bird points.
It's alot like these without the grip.

Good thing I looked up some tips and tricks, or else my forarm would have gotten a beating from string slap. Gotta rotate that elbow!

wait till the day when you've shot so much that you break a string at full draw.  fucking hell.

or, buy and use string wax, inspect the string regularly, and replace the string about once a year if you continue shooting a lot.

it's also immensely satisfying to make a bow from scratch.  there are a lot of teks out there.  you can even make one from a 2x4 purchased at the hardware store, but learning to ID osage orange and keeping an eye out for a nice specimen will give you just about the best bow one can make.

I made a halfway decent bow from PVC and fiberglass. It was super cheap, simple and effective, but don't skimp on the string like I did. It's not pleasant having a string snap...

cool cool.  mostly saying that i've never seen it and it seemed odd to me when i tried to envision using one on a recurve.  but i never used a peep sight on a compound, either, just a kisser button.

I was gonna say the same thing. I've never seen anyone use any kind of sight on a recurve. I didn't. Like 80% of it is form and anchor placement and consistency. If you can get all that down aiming takes care of itself.

I'm glad you chose a recurve. Its nice to see more people interested in traditional archery.

I couldn't agree more on the making your own now thing. It's always been a dream of mine to get really good at making bows and arrows.

I used to make bows all the time when I was lil. mostly lol sapling things. was gonna order this crazy horn from Africa to make a composite bow but I was like 11 or some shit. best one I ever made was when I bound together a bunch of those fiber glass rods tho. that thing ripped but I considered it cheating cuz wasnt made of natural materials
