being that the state of illinois has found me un-fit to purchase a handgun on account of my being mentally un-stable in the past 5 some years i cannot LEGALLLY own a gun.
but today my friends my constitutional rights are in full swing. a foaf has just returned from the afar and lo and behold he has quite the business going for himself. the dude is selling guns, and assured me beacuse of some loophole that i can buy one from him and it will be leagal or somthing. i really dont care if itst legal or not... anywahs $800 later and i have my own Beretta! holds 15 rounds 9 mm, im going to go out in the woods and shoot some shit in the near future!
i think that im going to go and keep it loaded and under my pillow incase someone wants to fuck with me.
damn i cant remember who, but someone told me that my future wiould end up like this......
-------------------- PEACE zippoz "in times of widespread chaos and confusion, it has been the duty of more advanced human beings - artists, scientists, clowns, and philosophers - to create order. In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption" "People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

Personally, I hope to buy a gun some day too, but I'm not paranoid enough to keep it loaded and under my pillow. Actually, I'd be more paranoid about something going wrong while tossing and turning in my sleep.

Please don't come hard at me guys, I'm not intending to come off as a prick
But I just don't see any rhyme or reason to having a hand gun? Can someone give me a viewpoint?
And for the record I have a Beretta 20 gauge and a Winchester 7mm

Well, some people get them for self-defense(if I were a woman, I'd definitely want to keep one in my purse), and some just like to take them to the shooting range. And some people do it for both reasons, while others have their own reasons.

so i take it that means u dont like spicy food then? isnt it illegal to shoot mexicans dead (even if they are crossing the border at night) to cook and eat them?
seriously, i live in lil ole ingerland, i cant actually think of anyone i know who owns a gun of any sort. all this gun stuff is a bit of an alien concept for me and i'm happy to keep it that way! i do have a bow and arrow(s), though i havnt used it for about 20 years and is currently at my parents house 200 miles away. used to quite enjoy target bow shooting when i was 15, but that was a long time ago and i have moved on since then!

I've owned guns, including hand guns, for years. I don't expect to ever use one in self-defense, but I like to be prepared. And the presence of guns in American homes keeps down the number of break ins of occupied dwellings. Last time I looked less than 10 percent of home break ins in the US happened when the owner was home. In Britain it was over 50 percent. Thieves don't like getting shot. So even if you don't own a gun, you benefit from the fact that your neighbor does - and the bad guys don't know which one of you is prepared to deal harshly with him.
I also travel in remote areas where illegal immigrants enter the US. They are often in desperate condition. I always carry a gun in such areas. I will share my water and food with them, but I'll not be a victim.
Besides, it is my patriotic duty to own a gun. It is part of the Constitutional balance of power. If guys like me aren't armed, then only the criminals and the government (redundant?) will be. That would not be a good thing.
But I would never keep a loaded gun under my pillow. Besides being uncomfortable, I know that I don't always wake up fully aware. Once in awhile I wake up half-dreaming. That is not a good mental state in which to be wielding lethal force. I keep my defense gun in a steel lock-box under the bed. That way I know I will have to be fully awake before I can get to it. Also, I have kids around. I trust them and have taught them gun safety and I really am confident that they would not mess with a gun without my supervision, but why take chances? Besides, other people's kids are sometimes in the house and their parents may have taken the approach that ignorance is preferable to knowledge. I need to protect them too.
If you feel the need to keep a gun under your pillow, you might want to either move to a new neighborhood (if your fear is clearly real), or look into why you feel like you are going to be victimized. Maybe you are at war with the world when you don't need to be. Maybe you watch too much tv or violent movies. That can skew your view of the world. With some notable exceptions, it is actually a pretty decent place.

Not to say anything derrogatory to you but,
Quote:

This is the wrong mentality. When was the last time someone "fucked" with you in your sleep?
Back home, we had a couple kids hop out of the car and run to the canal, just to try out they're illegally gotten AK-47. The man that owned the property heard the shots, one boy stopped and turned with the gun, the owner gave two 12 guage chest wounds that killed one boy, and crippled the other trying to make it to the car The man did nothing wrong, he was fearing for his life. Their are rightful purposes and wrongful purposes. My advice to you would be simply to use your head.
And don't forget that when you squeeze off a round at another person the tables are turned.

I keep a Stun Gun in my car. I would keep a gun but if i ever need to use it i wouldnt want to kill the person. i would rather send 300,000 volts into his chest and kick him while he is on the ground..

i'd rather lose my tv and laptop than lose my life. confronting an armed intruder is a lottery whether u have a gun too or not. start firing guns (even in self defence at an armed intruder) and anyone could get killed - u, the intruder or some (stupid but basically innocent) kids like in Louise's story.
it seems to me that there is a very very good reason why the state of illinois doesnt want mentally unstable individuals keeping loaded hand guns under their pillow. frankly, zippoz, i'd be amazed if you are holding that gun legally (despite what your foaf told u). but as u already said, that doesnt bother you - another good reason why the state doesnt want you having a gun! if i were you i'd ask your freind for a refund and go spend the $800 on a week in Acapulco.

I'm going to have to agree with Kid Shelleen, if you have to worry about someone fucking with you in your sleep, maybe you shouldn't be sleeping there! If you have 800 to blow on an illegal handgun(felony), (you have to have a license to sell guns no matter what your friend told you) you have enough to assure your safety in a new location. I just don't understand why Americans are so paranoid that you would have to sleep with one under your pillow . Obviously there is a reason the state of Illinois doesn't want you to have a gun. "when was the last time someone fucked with you in your sleep??" Does this happen often zippoz? This just defies rational thought

A stun gun is a great idea! Keep that under you pillow, and the real gun in a lock box under your bed. At the worst you'll fry yourself in your sleep and wake up feeling fuzzy Then if someone attacked you, you could stun them, and while they are on the ground, get the real gun out and decide if they are a threat to you.
Or.... you could move to Hawaii with me where it's safer
Yeah stun guns!

Seriously though...even IF criminals that are "fucking with you in your sleep" are weilding an AK-47, you having a gun or any weapon will increase the likelihood of one or both of you dying.
Instead of being a tough guy, if someone is stealing your shit, don't try to be a hero. Your life is worth much more than your TV, laptop, computer, whatever the thief can steal. This sounds cliche, but it's very true.

Incorrect. If someone breaks into your house while you're at home, it's quite likely that they intend to harm you, and having a gun will increase your chances of being able to defend yourself. That said, there's no need to keep it locked and loaded under your pillow. If you don't have enough time to unlock a drawer and load a few bullets, then you're probably fucked anyway.

Oh wow so handguns cause crime? Because last time i checked its PEOPLE who cause crime remember. Correlation does not equal Causation.
A handgun is a tool and is no worse than the person who uses it. Just like drugs. A drug is no worse than the person who uses it.
If you outlaw guns than only criminals will have guns. You cant even argue with people like you because your logic just does not work.
and might i reiterate. CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION.

You could use the gun to shoot your drinks.
That would teach them to fall over all the time.

where the hell do you get all your money from?
first you want to throw down 3K on some plot of sand in AZ.... now you spend $800 on a gun.
you claimed to have only worked three days this whole winter!?!?!
do you have a trust fund or something?
(please take no offense, im just wondering how you afford to vacation in mexico, buy acres of land and weapons w/ no income.)

Owning a rifle or shotgun for HUNTING is AOK in my book. You can still use it for protection if you need to.

Handguns are fun, and I personally prefer them because I'm a weak girl, and to hold up a real rifle takes a lot of arm/shoulder/back strength. I like to use my colt 45 to shoot fruit and veggies at the gun range in my town, it helps feed the animals that night- and we all like to help the animals! You can blow up a lot of stuff with a .45!

Actually, you also said:
"Owning a hand gun does not prevent crime, it causes crime."
Please cite some evidence. Any evidence.
You also said that:
"Hand guns are for people with little dicks and NO self-esteem."
This is simply a case of attacking your opponent personally because you can't make a rational argument against their position. Not that I really care what you think about my dick . . . In fact, I suggest you stop thinking about other people's dicks entirely.

boooooom is right. if someone breaks into your house while you are at home its most likely that they just want to burgle you and either thought u were out or think u wont wake up. murders (esp inside your house) are very rare, burglaries are relatively common. it's not in a burglars interest to shoot you and if u dash down the stairs nekkid guns blazing you are MUCH more likely to get hurt than if u hide in the closet (behind your grow chamber perhaps!!) and pretend not to be in.
of course guns dont cause crime, but they do facilitate some of it - if you aint got a gun u cant shoot it! i agree that in the states, however, if you outlaw guns now, there are soooo many in circualtion that lots will end up in the hands of criminals (perhaps mentally unstable ones, which is a scary thought). if, however, you live somewhere where gun laws have always been quite restrictive then you find that gun crime is much much lower. that is not an option for the US now though, tis too late and thats a shame.

I guess that you have TONS of evidence that owning a hand gun actually PREVENTS crime. If EVERY one on the planet owned a hand gun .... will crime dissapear?....
I dont think so.
The whole point in owning a hand gun is to have a handy wheapon to shoot someone.
PERIOD
There isnt any other reason in having a HAND gun.
Owning a hand gun will not make you ANY safer. You may FEEL safer, but it is an illusion.

A few things that are wrong about that statement: 1. Hand guns can be used for many purposes, the main one being self-defense. 2. Self-defense with a handgun does not necessarily involve pulling the trigger. All you have to do is point it at someone, and they'll usually back off. 3. Shooting someone does not necessarily involve killing them.
Quote:

There are actually people who hunt with handguns, and there are those that simply like to take it to the shooting range. Also, you can't keep a rifle or shotgun concealed in a holster while you're outside on the streets--which is probably when you're the most at risk.

What about rapists who break into people's homes? I've heard quite a few stories about those kinds of incidents. And a rapist doesn't need a gun to be dangerous.

sure, paradigm. rapists sometimes break into strangers houses, and having a gun handy then might be useful. thats not what i said though, i simply said that if u find someone in your house at 3am then the most likely reason for them being there is to burgle you. that is undeniable. rapes and murders are rare, burglaries common. in an earlier post u stated (something like) if there is a stanger in your house it is quite likely they are there to hurt you. that statement of yours was not true, they are most likely there to burgle u. it's a statistics thing - do the maths! also the most likely person to rape or murder you is not a stranger, but rather someone you aldready know.
i am lucky, i live in a VERY safe part of the world and dont personally know anyone who has been raped. in fact in the six years i have lived in my town i have never even heard of a report of ANY gun crime here (population 30,000). i think our perspectives, therefore, may be very different.
much of the states has a much bigger problem with gun crime, i dont know what the solution is. i'm just glad i dont have to worry about whether it would be a good idea to sleep with a loaded gun under my pillow and i pity those people who do have to worry like that.

well, i guess i need to take mine back. they screwed me over at the gun shop. i wasn't told that my gun was made to kill a person. come to think of it, in all the years i've been visiting gun shows & shops, shooting guns, and just being around them, i have never once heard anyone even mention anything about shooting a person with a handgun. the only people i hear talking about killing other people with handguns are the anti-handgun people.
please abstain from posting until you have a rational point to make.

How is that undeniable? Most burglaries happen during the day when people are at work. If someone chooses to rob you while you're at home, it's likely that they have a plan to deal with those people.

it's a statistics thing - do the maths!
Statistically, someone is less likely to break into your house if they think you have a gun. Statistically, burglars are more likely to break in when no one's home. Statistically, America has an alarmingly high rape and murder rate. So statistically, I think it makes sense to keep a gun.
Quote:

Maybe so, but there are still areas where it's not safe to walk the streets unarmed. I've been mugged by strangers before(and in an area I always had considered to be rather safe), so don't think that just because a stranger is less likely to do it that they aren't still a threat.

Indeed, you are lucky for that. Others are not so lucky. I've known women who have been raped at some point, one of them being my own mother. So you get off your fucking high horse about guns and recognize that some people actually need protection.

Handguns aren't made to kill people, handguns with silencers and extra round clips were made to kill people. Everyone should be familiar with handguns, someone with little knowledge of handguns is much more dangerous than the gun itself.

What an interesting thread! After reading the thread Ill add a few comments.
I own several guns, some are rifles ( 1923 8mm Mouser, 1954 Russian SKS, 1957 Russian M44) some are hand guns ( 1944 M1911A1, 1861 revolver, etc.) I hunt, use them for protection, and collect for the historical antiquity of the piece.
For those that think a handgun is not needed when hunting, you are wrong! Try hunting HOG. When you have just shot a 400lb hog (If you miss the heart you just piss them off) and he has you up a tree. The handgun comes in handy!
To the ones that have said, for protection you should just run and hide. You should remember that for years they told everyone on an air plain to do as a hijacker tells them. The hijacker just wants to go some where. On 9/11 we learned that some times people just want to kill us! Times are changing and I would not say it is for the better. Second why should I hide in my own home? Why should I let some one take what I have worked hard for?
To the ones that say "You will never need a hand gun." I love the line from the movie AVP, "It is like a condom, I would rather have one and not need it, then need one and not have it!"
Just my 2 cents

I try to make my points as thorough and concise as possible, touching on every point made, if possible. It has nothing to do with chilling out and everything to do with being a good debater.
Quote:
even in the states rape and murder are MUCH MUCH MUCH less common than burglaries at night.
And burglaries are MUCH MUCH MUCH less common than traffic accidents, but that doesn't mean burglaries aren't a problem. Also statistically, you are by far more likely to be killed by someone from your own country than by some invading army, but that doesn't mean we don't need a military. Saying that something else is more likely to happen is a straw man argument which ignores the actual likelihood of the event in question.

Actually, pointing a gun at them is likely to stop them in their tracks, with the added bonus that you can hold them there while the cops come to arrest them and prevent them from committing more burglaries.
Quote:
only an idiot would think its a good idea to keep a loaded gun under their pillow where i live. i'm sorry to hear its different where u live. thats bad luck. statistically it might make sense for u to keep a gun, that's a pity.
I've said all along that it's stupid to keep a gun under your pillow. If I had a gun, I'd keep it locked and unloaded in a drawer next to my bed, with the ammunition in another drawer. Or if I was really paranoid I'd keep it loaded next to my bed with the safety on, but never under my pillow.

The M44 is on the mark at 1000 feet. Kicks like a mule, it has a steel but plate and fires a round that is 7.62x54 (Bigger than a 308 round)

I have not had the opportunity to shoot a 91/30 s, If it uses the same 7.62X54 round pull it tight to your shoulder because it will kick like a mule. 5 to 7 rounds and my shoulder is black and blue.
Why do you need a FFLC&R license? I just stopped in at a gun show, laid down 150$ cash and walked out with my M44, no muss, no fuss, no background check.

well, paradigm, for the most part nothing u have said contradicts anything i have said and vice versa. your debating technique borders on suggesting i said things i simply did not. for example i never said burglary wasnt a problem!
if you want me to quantify the problem here i can tell you that where i live there are 2.5 people out of 1000 can expect to be burgled in any one year. of those 2.5 burglaries a very tiny fraction (less, i suggest, than 1 in 1000 of them, even that is probably an exaggeration) will involve firearrms. so that's at most a 2.5 chance in a million of having an armed burglar in your house in any one year. i consider burglary here a problem but, no doubt, it it worse where u are so u can keep your gun, i dont need it!
it is important to make relative comparisons. everyday we make comparisons (this road is quicker than that road, this person is more beautiful than that person, this bit of cake is bigger than that bit of cake etc etc). it's important to make these comparisons so we can put things in context in the world.
if u point (or shoot) a gun at a drug crazed armed nutter he will try to shoot you. if u successfully hide from him he wont. it is the drug crazed nutter u have to worry about, not "rational thinking" burglars who usualy just want money, not trouble.
i dont mind chatting to a "good debater" i dont particulalry like it when they say things like "You live in a very sheltered world, and don't appreciate the danger that others have to face" thats not debate, its conjecture on your part. you know almost nothing about me, i assure u that although i currently live in a very safe part of the world, if u did know me you would not say that i dont appreciate the dangers others (and myself at some times) have to face. i am, "life experienced" and "worldly wise" to say the least!!
here, u would be breaking the law by keeping a loaded handgun under your pillow, or indeed in a drawer unloaded. but i accept that things are different in other places, and if i lived somewhere where every lowlife scumball packs a magnum then i probably would want one too. something else we most likely agree on.

that's pretty good. that rifle could be used as a deer gun. i heard the m44s were one of the more accurate older rifles.
i don't need the fflc&r to buy the gun, but it will save me a lot of money in the long run and has other benefits. i can have guns shipped across state lines to my home. i can get discounts at some shops.
for example: i can have a russian m44 at my doorstep for $64.95+shipping (usually $12-15), $58.95 for an m91/30 or m38, $88.95 for a yugoslavian sks, $89.95 for a cz52.
i do have to pay shipping, but i don't have to pay sales tax or any ffl transfer fees. the license costed $90, but i'm still saving a lot of money by having one.

sa for my financial situation asked by soneone with 1500 posts i dont remember who, page 2...
i blew that last of my cash on the gun, and have not yet bought the land. im hoping for a loan from a bank, working on my business plan now, working with my teachers/lawyers. currently i am like $800 in debt, but that all changes when the snow falls
oh and doint think for a second that i dont have extra loaded clips
its funny the other day i went out to shoot some cans off of the woodpile in the back yard, and my stepbrother, with some serious issues (24ish living in my parents basement, cant get a job becaue he cant pass a drug test, despite one of his family members is president of a very powerful union....) was going off on how the bb gun didnt scare him and so on and so forth....
funny

I dont think so.
The whole point in owning a hand gun is to have a handy wheapon to shoot someone.
PERIOD
There isnt any other reason in having a HAND gun.
Owning a hand gun will not make you ANY safer. You may FEEL safer, but it is an illusion.
agr8fulchick... If you can shooot a .45 then Im sure you could shoot a .22 rifle just as easily.
Your not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to guns. I will reiterate once again. A handgun is a tool its no worse than the person who uses it.
Remember knowledge is power. Ad hominem knee jerk reactionary arguments will get you no where.

well, paradigm, for the most part nothing u have said contradicts anything i have said and vice versa. your debating technique borders on suggesting i said things i simply did not. for example i never said burglary wasnt a problem!
I was merely pointing out the irrelevance of your argument.
if you want me to quantify the problem here i can tell you that where i live there are 2.5 people out of 1000 can expect to be burgled in any one year. of those 2.5 burglaries a very tiny fraction (less, i suggest, than 1 in 1000 of them, even that is probably an exaggeration) will involve firearrms. so that's at most a 2.5 chance in a million of having an armed burglar in your house in any one year. i consider burglary here a problem but, no doubt, it it worse where u are so u can keep your gun, i dont need it!
Good. Don't get one then, and stay out of other people's business when they do decide to get one. Thanks.
it is important to make relative comparisons. everyday we make comparisons (this road is quicker than that road, this person is more beautiful than that person, this bit of cake is bigger than that bit of cake etc etc). it's important to make these comparisons so we can put things in context in the world.
Relative comparisons are only useful when put in the context of concrete statistics. When considering safety, you don't just prepare for the most likely scenario. You prepare for anything that might go wrong.
if u point (or shoot) a gun at a drug crazed armed nutter he will try to shoot you. if u successfully hide from him he wont. it is the drug crazed nutter u have to worry about, not "rational thinking" burglars who usualy just want money, not trouble.
If I have a gun aimed someone and they start reaching for their gun, I can shoot him before he can shoot me. Problem solved. However, most people, even criminals, value their lives and do not want to get shot. Therefore, most will either put their hands up and drop their weapon or run away. Either way, they're no longer a threat to me.
i dont mind chatting to a "good debater" i dont particulalry like it when they say things like "You live in a very sheltered world, and don't appreciate the danger that others have to face" thats not debate, its conjecture on your part.
No, it is reading what you have said and seeing the implications of it.
you know almost nothing about me
I know what you have written, and I assume what you have written about yourself to be true. If I am wrong in that assumption, please forgive me.
i assure u that although i currently live in a very safe part of the world, if u did know me you would not say that i dont appreciate the dangers others (and myself at some times) have to face. i am, "life experienced" and "worldly wise" to say the least!!
You talk about how safe it is where you live as if the same applied to everyone. This is why I say you do not appreciate the dangers others face.
here, u would be breaking the law by keeping a loaded handgun under your pillow, or indeed in a drawer unloaded.
I'm guessing you don't live in America, right?
but i accept that things are different in other places, and if i lived somewhere where every lowlife scumball packs a magnum then i probably would want one too. something else we most likely agree on.
Well why didn't say so from the beginning? We could've avoided this argument altogether.

i did. in the very first post of mine that was directed to you i said "sure, paradigm. rapists sometimes break into strangers houses, and having a gun handy then might be useful."
if u didnt just dogmatically assume that you disagreed with everything i say then you might have noticed that. u seem to like arguing with everything i write far too much for you to appreciate what lays behind my words, some of which u may actually agree with.
frankly if u have only just worked out that i dont live in the states then you certainly dont have anything like the insight into me or my life to make any assumptions about how sheltered or otherwise my life is or has been.
no doubt u will now continue to quote and repudiate every word of this post too, thereby indicating that you value argument over discussion. or do u accept that some of the things i have said are actually valid points?
have a nice day.

i think that im going to go and keep it loaded and under my pillow incase someone wants to fuck with me.
damn i cant remember who, but someone told me that my future wiould end up like this......
if its a handgun I'm pretty sure its not legal. You need transfer papers, to transfer a handgun. Also 800 for a beretta? You can get the high end models for like 600 with laser sights.

Look guys....Im not against any gun laws
I think that hand guns have their purpose(police,military,etc..) I just dont understand why the agerage joe-blow needs a hand gun.
I'v heard the whole protection issue. I also know that their are better ways to "protect" yourself.
If you want to have target practice get an air pistol.
Do you honestly believe that ANY kind of gun should be allowed in the hands of a civilian?
Where do you draw the line?
I just see no practicle use for hand guns.
IF a civilian wants to get a hand gun. They should have to go thru some kind of training.
When a guy with a history of MENTAL instability can go out and get a hand gun....

are you saying that im an average joe blow? not the case my good man, and as a matter of fact i have a nice air pistol, but as for defense i can blind someone at 15 feet, but that aint gonna stop em if they got a real gun...

What a god awful place to live in if you are going to fear all the " what ifs". Paranoia will drive a person crazy. Fear kills innocent people more than anything. If you want to shoot a couple rounds at something, go find someone with a gun and the two of you can have some fun, but under your pillow? C'mon. Relax and enjoy life and forget about all these "people" out to "Get You"?

And you have had HOW many people point a gun at you?
You spent $800 for a gun that you will probably never have to use.
IF you are attacked it isnt likley they will use a gun. Even if they do your not going to see it untill they are already on top of you. Mace will have the same effect in almost EVERY situation.
A hand gun simply ISN'T needed. (unless your doing something illegal)

I have had cops point a gun at me too. It was a simple case of being with the WRONG people. I took a foaf to pick up his TV from the repair shop and go pawn it. No problem I will help. The DUMB ASS tried to pawn a rental! Well the owner of teh pawn shop pressed a button, which summoned the cops. Who, in turn, boxed us in w/2 undercover cops. Lights flashing and guns pointed. ME nor my friend got in trouble. We just had to go to the cop shop and answer some ????.
Now how would having a gun on me at the time made my life ANY easier???

i have to say, though zippoz, this is all a rather melodramitic way of getting your point over to your "family" and it wouldnt surprise me much if your last post is just the latest plot twist in your online life with many more to come.

Great! Just what the world needs. Another gun touting druggie.
I for one am happy to live in a country where i don't have to own a gun to feel secure.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline
