Florida Coniferous Psilocybe?? EDIT: Active Pluteus * 1
    #25214180 -

These were found on a dead & slightly decomposing pine log that I used to make a garden bed.  The log is half buried in garden soil & has lightly scattered wood chips surrounding it.

These mushrooms, as you can clearly see in the photos are growing up out of the pine log and have even displaced splinters in doing so.

The stem bruised blue immediately.  I have the four adult caps on foil now.  Note the stem photos feature traditional psilocybe growth pattern.

I have never cultivated any woodloving species.  What are these?  :coleman:

The one that pulled up from the ground when I cut the cap did have tiny rhizomorphs attached to the base.  They also exhibited bluing.

Maybe an active pluteus?

Sweet!  I'm cooking agar now & have three stems set aside for tissue transfers.

It's only been 90 minutes or so, but I swear I can see the pinkish-brown spores already.

Awesome find, GB!  Generate a culture of that sucker, and get it cultivated.  If you would, and, or need help in that department, I would humbly like to offer my services to you.

The cap color isn't right for Pluteus americanus - that species has a grey cap and the cap on this one is more brown.

How about the Pluteus albostipitatus group?

That's a good possibility, bloodworm made some killer micrographs of that species a few years ago, here's the link.

these are the deepest blue staining Pluteus i've ever seen on this site or elsewhere.  really an amazing sight for a Pluteus.

an eventual bioassay report would be very interesting.

I agree. They are a lot more potent looking than any other active pluteus I've  seen.

ha ha, of course you're right.

i meant to assay any fruits he later succeeds in growing...an isotype of the original specimens?

An isotype is a portion of the holotype that is sent to another herbarium for safekeeping, so if someone eats the holotype there is still something left.    You probably shouldn't eat isotypes either because like the holotype, once it's gone, there can never be another one.

Eating mushrooms cultured from the holotype would be fine.  The holotype should be cloned to agar while still fresh because Pluteus spores often don't germinate on agar.

I've learned so much from this site over the last seven years, from having no interest in mycology at all to trying to preserve a species.  None of this would be possible without the community.

Anyhow, when I found these I collected four caps and four stems.  The largest cap and stem will be sent to Alan.  The smallest cap turned to goo during the printing process, so I have two caps and three stems totaling about .25gram.  If any more of these mushrooms come up, they will be photographed, collected, gills swabbed, printed, tissue transferred, dried & saved until there's at least .5 gram for bioassay.
