Intestingly, most of the US nukes are in the 100 to 500 kt range while the Chinese nukes are all in the 3-5 megaton range

And we have waaaaay less nukes.

Now we only have enough nukes to fuck the world up X times rather than Y?
I guess that's a "glass half full" type persons idea of progress.

Would you rather it had gone in the other direction of more, larger nukes?

Watch this beauty, 1 Megaton:

optimal yield for a nuke is 0.9mt, with bigger ones more is radiated into the air thabn on target.

The US largest nuke in current use has a yield up to 1.2Mt I believe.

Lets pray they wont use them.

Cool fact. Two nuclear weapons were detonated in Mississippi.

There was one almost detonated by mistake in a Greensboro, NC B-52 crash in '61.  2 out of 3 of the switches armed

Edit for innacurracy.  It was Goldsboro, NC

The nuclear winter theory is kinda bullshit. Hundreds of nuclear weapons have been detonated in the atmosphere

What republican or russian fake news anus have you inadvertently been feeding your precious mind off my dear friend?

Check double check, triple check anything, most things have spin to them.

To the best of my knowledge Nuclear Winter theory is completely correct. Its scientific consensus

In nuclear war they won't nuke barren patches of soil but send entire cities ablaze at once and suck that toxic smoke up into the stratosphere where it blocks out the sun.

Not the nuclear blasts will cause the nuclear winter but catastrophic city sized blazes of thousands of square miles each.

Even a nuclear echchange between India and Pakistan alone can cause a worldwide nuclear winter.

Thermonukes are primarily a heat weapon. Everything combustibvle fir miles around, including your clothes, hair and the paint job on your car, will catch fire at once in a firestorm. This creates a vortex of smoke in itself.

A lot of explosions will be airbursts yes but hard targets will be hit by ground bursts.

Also, high profile targets like NYC, San Fran, Moscow will get hit each with at leasrt a dozen warheads in mere minutes, because of M.A.D redundency, they have to make sure the primary targets are hit with several MIRV warheads to prevent most rockets being taken out thus preventing primary targets from getting taken out.

Primary targets are targets capable of nuclear strike capability (if you live near silos you're dead) and major cities.

One city/one bomb is movie BS, the reality is far more messed up like that. Think at least half a dozen strikes on just one.

Theres russian ICBM's with 16 warheads of 150-300 kT each now. They are used in overlapping patterns.

You know, if you can kind of ignore the exact reason these people are building these things and just look at it as ‘fireworks’, that really is some amazingly beautiful shit right there.  I swear man, if only we could focus on living as much as we do on dying some incredible shit could be created..

Amanita86 I wish I had been there to witness it.

Its something of Divine Beauty.

We have been given the Fire of the Stars and must use it either to save the world or destroy it.

I hope we can save it.

My grandpa was a 20mm shell loader on a destroyer in the Pacific.  He watched the treaty being signed after we nuked Japan twice.  Took some leave then came back and did a year at Okinawa. He claimed to have mostly just played golf with a Japanese pro.  He said the people there were super cool (exact words).

Many Japanese are good people in peace time. In wartime they're as nuts as some of their anime but in peacetime - one of the world's lowest violence rates.

It goes both ways though:
