Has anyone ever been to a counselor and actually received noticeable help?
    #25101158 -

Not for substance abuse, but more for things like depression, anxiety, or things mentally that make it difficult to function in life?

Not "counselors" like mushrooms or whatever, but real people that you paid to get help.

I'm not one to go this route, but I think that for once I could actually benefit from it. Mushrooms did help me get over a majority of my depression but part of it is still there and as silly as it might sound, I think I might actually have an "avoidant personality disorder". I have no one in my family that I'm close to, I have no real friends, I feel so weird around other people, and I can't connect with another human to save my life. It's starting to get kind of rough.

I know there's a lot of horror counselor stories (I have a couple myself), so I'm wondering if anyone has actually had any success with this route.

Nope. No real help to be found therein.

I don't get how anyone with even a grain of rationality about them could be so black and white about anything in this life...

I've heard many horror stories; between my ex-partners and people I've discussed this subject with (as someone who was considering re-training to become a therapist), and yes, it does seem to me like there's probably three or four bad ones out there for every good one. But good ones definitely exist, and when found, are worth their weight in gold.

I worked with a therapist here in England for about fifteen months before I left the country back in 2016. Had I not left I'd still be working with her today. Not that I have any specific problems - I have no diagnosable mental health disorders - but I am a human, and given all the traps and failings that come from being stuck in that condition, someone highly skilled and trained in dealing with it is a HUGE help in becoming better at handling said condition.

The time I spent with that person was, and always will be precious to me. I put a lot of effort into it and I got a lot back out.

From my understanding however, I was a slightly unusual patient - I gave her so much to work with - whereas with many it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to open up. I've seen this in others who've attended various types of therapy before; the tendency to go 'well I'm here, you're getting paid, so fix me' - thus excusing themselves from doing the work required. Surprise surprise - they then tell their friends the therapist was shit when they get nothing out of it.

Like anything else in this life, you get out what you put in.

In this case it means spending time searching for a good one and not just taking the first that comes your way, and then it putting real effort into the work once you find one you're comfortable with.

Yes, but you should shop a lot of docs before settling with one.

A girl that works for me has a lot of issues in her personal life.  She would have some days that were better than others, but overall each day was a struggle.

Her mood and personality have undergone 180° degree shift ever since she found a good counselor.  Not only has her mood improved but her quality of work too

Same .  I was quite hesitant to get into therapy at first because I didn't think I needed help; but being able to talk about certain things and open up to another human about things going on in my life/bothering me has been a huge boon.

Therapists aren't doctors however, and I'm sure certification/licensing requirements differ by state and country. They also cannot prescribe medications in the US.  I believe when people are talking about "counselors" they are talking about therapists and not psychiatrists.  They are not the same thing; if you have or suspect you have a severe condition then psychiatrist and psychologist is the route you want to take.  If you meant therapist then I think you should look at reviews, try a few out.  If you're just starting, look for someone who wants to talk about your history, maybe one who asks piercing questions.  You do get out what you put in, but I've found a few therapists that don't really ask deeper questions because they assume you've done this before.  Not going into the past doesn't help to identify root causes to certain decisions and  behaviors .  Don't just keep your conversations present-tense with the therapist.

Yeah, treat it like an interview process IMO; you're looking for someone with a vibe that you feel is gonna harmonise with your own, someone you can get to feel very comfortable with, someone you feel will 'get you'.

Of course, it's hard to assess all that in the initial hour, so you just have to try your best....

Yeesh. After looking at the prices of therapists I'm questioning if it's worth it. It would take much longer than a few hours to cover everything I'd need to and at $150 an hour, that's what my tattoo artist charges :/

That's a lot. I was paying £40, which is about $50 US.

But then I only pay £50 for tats.

Either way, it was absolutely and definitely worth it - you couldn't put a price tag on what it did for me. I spent many thousands in total and would do it again in a shot - if I knew it would be the same person or someone as good. If anything, it should be a motivator to find the right person. Hopefully they do half price 1st session of something.

Look and ask brother; it can't do any harm!!

Yes.  I'm not giving out details but it can help.

What do you think this forum basically mimics?  Most therapy is based around talking. You don't have to choose to medicate.  Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who understands the shit going on for long enough to help you work through whatever issues are in your head holding you back from happiness.

I *HIGHLY* suggest everyone give actual therapy a chance before immediately shooting it down as is so popular on this site.  We have a lot of people here who are anti-prescription, anti-pharmacy, etc and those views can cause serious damage to someone who legitimately needs that help.

Also, state provided healthcare usually provided mental health services, and there are TONS of outreach programs.  If you want therapy bad enough, you can find it within an affordable range or free.  I can only speak for the USA though, but I live in a red state, very conservative, and our state funded healthcare will get you psyche treatments of all sorts.

LOL it's mad isn't it?

I remember when I was really getting into the swing with my therapy and was really enjoying it, and I would mention to someone that I was. I'd say about 2-3/10 people would respond in a real defensiveness' "I'd never get therapy I don't need anyone to tell me what I'm thinking/help me with decisions/what to do/etc".

It's like, mate; I never even suggested you get therapy. I was just talking about how much I enjoy it and how it's working for me...

Of course I never said that last bit but it's fascinating to observe. Of another 4-5/10 people you could see the stigma on their face just by bringing the subject up.

I don't know why so many humans judge things they've never tried but it seems to be the way of the majority of us.

Sadly.

I'm in Texas. My insurance kicks in on May 1, but it's from my employer. I have $40 put into a health savings account so I guess that'll help knock the cost down.
I'm admittedly anti pharmaceutical. Part of me feels like I need it, but I'm also afraid of what it'll do to me long term. Anxiety medication like Xanax and things like that make me very skeptical. Like 70% of the US is on that shit.

Well, as an adult you can choose not to go that route and you can openly discuss it with your medical professional of choice.  Something you should do anyway before blindly trusting them.  It also doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.  For the most part therapists are really good about you saying you want medication to be a last resort and if they can't help you with whatever type of therapy they offer, they usually can refer you to someone who can.

There definitely is an issue with over-prescribing as well as trying to use certain medications as catch alls for issues not easily diagnosed or understood, but there is also a shit ton of data about a lot of these problems and you might get some serious relief just talking about it and working through some basic steps/checks/etc.  A lot of people have behavioral issues that they refuse to see as well and need to unlearn that shit before they can really start to fix themselves.

Look into remote/online therapy.  Its fairly new but growing and there a couple of decent platforms to look at, not to mention it makes talking to someone insanely easier.  I despise driving to appointments.

Talkspacee and Betterhelp are the two most widely used.  I've used them both and prefer Betterhelp.  I know for a fact that they offer payment assistance that can cut the cost (which is already lower than IRL therapists) by over half.

I found an amazing counselor years back and she helped me tremendously. Granted she was not the first one that I visited, but after I found her I knew I had the right person. And, to boot, her rates were very reasonable.
She gave me some really great breathing and meditation practices that I still use to this day and she also helped me be where I was at. I always left there feeling so, so much better, and grateful for the life that I have.
It's just a matter of finding the right one.

I've spent 14 years in therapy up until recently. I've had 4 therapists during that time frame. The only one I could relate to was the first one I saw. I was with her for about 4 years but she passed away. The following three I had a very hard time relating/opening up to. I really can't explain why... I just couldn't... I've been going to an out patient clinic the past year since my wife past away and during that time became friends with a counselor whose an LCSW who offered to hook me up again. I'm not sure what I'm going to do just yet...

I guess the moral to my story is if you're lucky enough to hook up with the right person therapy could set you free... If you hook up with the wrong one though it could trip you up in a big way... Good Luck... I hope it works out for you...

I talk to some people who mock therapy and get angry/defensive about the subject.
And mindfulness. Some people become very agitated about the idea of introspection.

I believe for many people it's terrifying to look inward, and reflect on their emotional world,
and uncover the trauma they have buried and ignored their whole life.

I regularly see a wonderful therapist. She's been quite helpful.
