Super Simple Rye Grass Seed (RGS) Prep Tek Like a Boss. * 12

Supplies.

-Rye Grass Seed.
-Water.
-Gypsum (optional).
-Freshly brewed coffee (optional).
-Lids for grain spawn.
-Unmodified jar lids.
-Measuring cup.
-Measuring spoon.
-Quart jars.
-Foil.

 

1 & 1/4th cup (300ml) of rye grass seed per quart jar.


Pour grass seed into jar.
 

1/4 teaspoon of agricultural grade, powdered gypsum per quart jar (optional).
 

5/8th cup (150ml) of water per quart jar.

-Since this seed is being prepared for sclerotia production the method of using freshly brewed coffee will be employed.  If cultivating another species it's up to individual cultivator whether or not to opt to use coffee. 

Measure 75ml of water per quart jar.


Pour water into jar of grass seed.


Measure 75ml of coffee per quart jar.


Pour coffee into jar of grass seed and water.


Cap jar with unmodified lid.


Once jar with grass seed, water and coffee is capped, shake it.




Allow coffee/water to soak into seed for 2 hours.
(grass seed after soaking for 2 hours)


Remove unmodified lids from jars and replace them with spawning lids.


Place foil squares on top of lids.


Fill PC with water.


Place jars into PC.


-Cap PC and turn it on/turn on stove.

-PC for 90-120 minutes @ 15-18 psi.

-Allow grass seed to cool to room temperature inside of PC.

-Once grass seed has returned to room temperature it is ready to inoculate. 


Rye grass seed colonized with agar wedge just before shake.


Rye grass seed approach in full colonization.


Jars of RGS fully colonized. 


ATL#7 stones forming hard on the RGS.

Thanks, guys.  Wanted to throw this out there.  Have seen a few posts lately inquiring on how to prepare rye grass seed, and this is how it's done.  It's been years since have ran any rye grass seed, and don't have any pictures of mycelium, or sclerotia on it, so starting from scratch.  Have some Mexicana on agar to inoculate this seed with once jars cool.  Will be posting progress and updating OP as it continues.

I love RGS for the simplicity of it's preperation.

Can be tricky to get your water content down. But I love it.

How loose are the seeds if you shake the jar after PC'ing?

I've got a little cold soak vs. boil prepped RGS comparison grow going on right now and I'm thinking I might have to add a late entry to the field...

Seed is somewhat compacted down after having pressure from PC applied to them.  It's nothing a minor shake job won't alleviate though.  The tad bit of gypsum added helps prevent seed from becoming excessively clumpy, as well. 

Rye grass seed featured in OP was sourced from a local ma and pa farm store.  Have noticed not all local farm stores sell rye grass seed.  Another spot that has it locally is a garden nursery that's often frequented.

Thanks Ham. So far, RGS is nice to work with.



One variable I added to my cold soaked seed was I used cold brew I made from my SAF SAB coffee can for one container & regular drip of freshly ground for another. Any thoughts on which might perform better?
