Trump Fires Veteran Affairs Secretary Shulkin.
    #25098185 -

Trump has fired Shulkin and wants to replace him with someone who never worked for the VA. What do you think about it?

Sounds like a classic Trump move.

What exactly does VA deal with? Like veteran hospitals or something?

He wants to appoint his doctor. From all accounts, he's a good doctor, but he has never managed anything. The VA is the second largest agency in the federal government with a $200 billion budget. This country is turning into a banana republic.

I had to look up "banana republic" because i knew u werent talking about the brand name, which im familiar with, coming from Hawaii.

So in this context, the US is a banana republic because it exports one thing thats worth a lot of money, and thats military technology?

Like what? He's a physician. Eberyone in the military advances in rank. Rear admiral means he's been around for a while. As a doctor. He's probably never spent anytime on a boat.

The old incompetent director appointed by obama had done a horrible job. Not just incompetent but also corrupt. Things were going from bad to worse, any change has to be for the better. Little by little trump is fixing things no matter how much the far left hates it.

They do have doctors on ships. An aircraft carrier basically has a small hospital, with a number of doctors. Everyone in the military does not advance in rank. Particularly when you get to the senior enlisted and officer ranks. He did not make Admiral by just showing up to work for a long time. If he was just showing up he would have been gone from the Navy long before he made Admiral.

EDIT: You should read his bio. He has done a few things, including forward deployment in Iraq and he was also Obama's doctor.

As a doctor, he probably entered the navy with a rank of Lieutenant Commander.  And yes, as an officer you are expected to be promoted or leave.

As far as I understand, just showing up every day and being average will get you to the equivalent of colonel, which is captain (in 20 years of showing up on time). If you want to be a flag office, you have to be somewhat good at your job. Not sure if it's different for doctors, but I'm inclined to believe that he just picked up a doctor certification at some point in time.

EDIT FOR QUOTE:

I don't think so. I think if a doctor entered the service for the express purpose of doctoring, they'd start at Lieutenant commander, and stay there or captain until they started doing non-doctor things with competency.

As for the VA management, I think this would be an apt comparison:

They start at Ensign for the first two years of medical training ala Navy Medical Corps but some can circumvent this if already a tenured doctor...not to meantion big commission (not enlistment)bonus...

Anyway the VA is getting better kinda like Bill Murray's baby steps in "What about Bob?" I just got an email from the VA saying they can rate claims in 30 days....with my claim it took 1 year 9 months in 2003.

You enter active duty as a lieutenant or lieutenant commander. This is coming from my ex who went to the academy.

Your ex is full of crap. There are a few high need or specialty positions that might allow for that but the vast majority will never have that option. LT maybe LCDR very unlikely.

This is coming from me. Someone that spent many years teaching Navy officers how to tie their own shoes.

Its true, u can get higher ranking just by having more education such as college degrees or speciality school certificates.

Entering as a licensed physician would fall under the special circumstances I mentioned. You are being compensated for the many years you put into education. But for most it will not work that way. Also it is a long trip from LCDR to Admiral. Admiral is not something that is just handed out. In the regular rank and file of the Navy many never make it past LCDR.

To be a commissioned line officer you have to have a college degree. There are programs for enlisted to become non line officers that technically do not require a degree but in practice it has been rare for a long time to be selected without one.

Some enlisted do get a small bump in pay grade if they have some extra education. But that is not what we were talking about.
