Nutrition is tough. The top scientists in the field barely can even agree on the basics. I think genetics and lifestyle/environment give us all such a unique makeup that most nutrition advice is just simply not universal.

I've tried a month of Keto mixed with intermittent fasting(eating 2 times 11:00am and 6:00pm), mostly just to see if there really was any difference. I lost weight pretty consistently, as I was running a lot at the time too. Can't say my energy or mood was changed drastically at all. The best part was it made me a lot more conscious about what I was eating, and how much. I also tend to eat when I'm stressed, and the fasting cut down on that.

I love food and wine too much to obsess that much now. My only strategy is to eat less garbage and move more.

Because it makes me feel good. I have more energy, It shed weight off of me, I don't have afternoon crashes, I think more clearly, I never feel hungry and I have a better overall feeling about myself. It makes me feel better in many ways. Plus it reduces my risks of heart disease which is helped by sugar, it reduces my risks of diabetes, it stabilizes blood pressure, my liver doesn't have to process excess glucose into fat.

Finally, I've been told since a young age that I have abdomenal muscles. I have yet to see the visual evidence of that so I'm curious. Is my six pack symetric or is it zig zaggy like some? I need to get to the truth man.

Also, it reduces viceral fat which is killer. And helps eliminate bad cholesterol. I could go on but if theis doesn't convince you of at least trying it for a month (and lose an easy 20 pound, if not a pound a day since you're bigger) then nothing will convince you and you will have to go the hard way in order to lose weight.

I can vouch for this. I get the same kind of clarity in ketosis.

Yep, but don't expect anyone to get onboard just because its good for you plus takes off the excess fat and is easy. Sounds like a no brainer but they have all the excuses in the world.

of course it is addictive, it is one of the very first things- if not THE first thing- your lizard brain learns to associate with survival. the dopaminergic pathways involved in carb consumption form very very early in your life.

I wouldn't be able to do the ketogenic diet. carbs = 4kcals per gram, fats = 9kcals.

i do not find fats to be satiating and never achieved the "non hungry" state proclaimed by some people who claim to operate under constant ketosis. i prefer to get ATP from polysaccarides in things like oatmeal and potatoes because they taste great. i do eat some fruit though, also because it tastes great. I have lost a shitload more weight since just going on a diet that is balanced with about 50%carbs/40%protein/10%fats

the trick there is not to consume excess

Have you ever fasted for long enough to hit ketosis before? IIRC, it's ~70 hours in men, ~50 in women.

It is sooooooooo worth trying at least once in your life.

It makes plain sense that when you get there what a survival mechanism it is - as hunter gatherers, in winter, our carb sources would be extremely limited, and it wouldn't help us to hunt if we were plagued by hunger and unfocused and not burning our fat storage.

And that's exactly what I find when I get there - zero hunger pangs, a focus unlike one I can achieve on a diet rich in carbs, and visible fat burning from my body.

I plan to do a 5 day fast at least once or twice a year for a while - I really enjoy it.

I have never fasted that long before. According to wikipedia, though, only about 24 hours worth of glycogen is stored.

Please give it a try sometime man. Four days. As much water as you want, nothing else. It can't do any harm right?

Yet it could be a truly fascinating experience that teaches you about yourself...

I hear you. I quit cigs 2 years ago and still can not completely quit sugar. I mean ive cut way back in that the only real sugar i get is from the few sodas i have at work every day. Other than that I eat fairly well.

I eat tons of bread, noodles, fruits, potatoes, and all sorts of carbs and never gain weight and I also feel great...

...I also don't eat hardly any processed or cane sugars and I'm vegan.

Carbs are amazing and awesome and people who won't eat fruit or grain are really missing out on good nutrition imo.  I understand you have to take in less calories than you use in order to lose weight and getting to a healthy weight will make you feel good but you can't live that way forever cause it eventually it causes depression and it's really bad for you...done to an extreme that is.

Your body NEEDS natural sugars (carbs)...it's not just addicted to them, it actually needs them but there is a balance that I should personally start taking into account a little more as I get a little older.  It's not like I should be eating as many carbs as I do all the time...I could use a lot more light veggies and even more fruits instead of so much starch but if you spend a lot of energy, especially as a vegan, then eating starchy foods is a great way to replace that energy.

Fasting is something I need to start doing more too.

You can get your carbs via complex carbs, it does not have to be sugar. You can eat a totally sugar free diet and I don't mean consuming aspartame or other chemical crap. Starches for example break down into sugar but unlike refined sugar it does not hit your system all at once, its slower and more gentle which makes a big difference.

I do not believe you go into ketosis simply by removing sugar from your diet. Full fledged ketosis takes more extreme measures but you can call it a keto diet if you wish. Its certainly tons better than the typical fast food high sugar and fat diet many people follow.

Avoid chemicals! in particular fake sugar and fake fat. Olestra is a brand of fake fat and it is not good for you. About the only good sugar substitutes are stevia, and one or two sugars which have a low glycemic index. About the best way to avoid nasty chems in your food is to buy organic or unprocessed food such as fresh or fresh frozen veggies and fruits.

IMO, this is what you need for the change in conscious state to occur.

Getting enough hormetic compounds (Resveratrol, curcumin from turmeric, EGCG, Sulfurophane, etc...) is really important too.

Tell me why you think so. I'm just curious to see your rationale.
