Using leaves as a substrate. anyone try?
    #25035070 -

I'm sure it can be done, i mean heck oysters for instance will grow on darn near anything...but have wondered if anyone has tried it?

The reason i ask is I typicallygrow on straw, which I dump in a trash can and then use my weed wacker it cut up pretty well.

I've grown on and using hardwood pellets/etc.

however i dumped al my leaves into my garden last year and well its getting warm out, so I decided to take the mostly whole leaves that have dried out, and stik them into a trash can and use my weed wacker to basically mulch them, and they come out pretty darn fine...so i am thinking...well why not right? they retain misoture decent, the mycelium obviously travels well with them because they do on forest floors for miles...the leaves are free and then some......and well one can make a huge pile of even the mulched products.....surely enough to fill plenty of milk cartons, plastic tubes, laundry baskets or 5 gallon buckets....
so anyone actually do this? I mean ive been using 5 gallon buckets and straw with wood supplement for years now, but .....

and what has been grown on them if anyone has any experience?

Hi. I dump my contaminated oyster grain in big piles of leaves on common ground. I've seen oysters growing from them sometime later. Go for it and let us know how you go!

I have bags of Phoenix oyster and Pohu oyster growing on a mix of pine straw and hardwood leaves i soaked for 16-18 hrs in wood ash water. Slower colonization time but it's working.
