Monotub Dunking Tek/Idea

I know a lot of people really like to dunk their substrates after each flush, but we all know this can be a very messy and frustrating procedure.  Today I thought of a good system that will help make the dunking procedure more enjoyable and less messy.  This tek is really only for monotub dunks.

1) take all the polyfill out of the holes in your monotub.
2) find some PVC piping or dowel rods that can fit through the holes in your tub. You will need two long pieces that can reach across the width of your tub.
3) take your PVC or whatever your using and slide it through the bottom holes of your tub, across your substrate, and out the opposite hole. This is to prevent your substrate from floating up.  The substrate will push up on the PVC but the PVC won't be able to go anywhere because its held in place by the holes in your tub.
4) place your Monotub in your bathtub and fill it up with water.
5) If you found PVC that fits your holes tight then no water will escape the tub and you can just leave to soak.  If your using smaller diameter PVC, dowel rods, or something else that doesn't completely plug up the holes simply leave the water running the entire time.  The water will drain out the bottom holes but your substrate will stay submerged for the most part.

By following this method you never have to pick up your substrate and risk breaking it.  Also everything is done in the monotub so theirs no need for a second tub or anything fancy.

I just thought of this yesterday and thought it was a good idea, if you don't like it then don't try it.

Pretty good idea but I came up with a much more simple solution.

For each monotub you buy a second tub.Cut the bottom of the spare tub out.Now line your tub you plan on using as your monotub with a trash bag and place the bottom that you cut out in the trash bag liner....mix your bulk and spawn (or layer).Dunk the tub and when you're ready to remove the substrate to properly drain you can just lift the substrate out by the liner with no fear of it breaking or falling apart.

Yeah I liked this idea a lot.  Both good though.

Hi, I like the sound of, if I understand it correctly. I've been devising something similar, but with the cut out tub sitting inside the uncut box. The inner tub would be cut to be level with top of substrate (using the dremel to fashion some little handles an inch or two above that level with enough purchase to readily lift it out) and have two half inch holes underneath at opposite corners (maybe four holes, one at each corner?) sealed with rubber stoppers. The rubber stoppers would raise the inner tub slightly above the outer, preventing it getting wedged in situ). The problem is this... I would prefer not to have to lift the bin liner containing the substrate out at all. Just weight the sub down, fill with water enough to submerge, leave for a bit, and then when ready to drain, lift the inner box up, tilt 80 degrees (perhaps with a flyscreen mesh frame to hold sub in place) emptying water into outer box. That all sounds elegant enough so far, however, the bin liner would need maybe half a dozen very tiny holes underneath the sub around the edges - enough to allow draining, but not large enough to negate the principle of the liner. It's this last part that I'm unsure about. Would be grateful to hear any views on this.
