Like I said...

Also, that video was taken over the course of what appears to be about three hours (it's really difficult to gauge, in part because my points of reference keep leaving the frame and I don't feel like being super-accurate about it right now) and with a very narrow field of view.  The apparent size of the Moon (for naked eye observations) is almost an eighth of what it is in that video.

Incidentally, you might want to look into some sort of a quadrant (which you could probably print a scale for) or a sextant if you really want to measure the positions of sky-objects.

lol what? Yes it does. The moon moves approximately 0.5 degrees per hour relative to stars. Not perceptible to humans. For reference the stars located in the plane of the solar system (in which the moon and planets exist) move nearly 15 degrees per hour, the moon 14.5.

When was this? Gimme the exact date and I'll bet you Jupiter was very close to the moon that night

That's almost certainly a star, unless it's a planet.

Jupiter rises around dawn, this time of the year.  It also doesn't look like Jupiter is really getting that close to the Moon at all either (while both are visible, anyway) and at this point the Moon looks like it's still West of Jupiter.

Jupiter does not rise at dawn at any particular time of year. Every year is different, shifting approximately one month every year.

Anyhow I found the date based on his post. The night he reported the UFO, the moon was extremely close to Alpha Tauri aka Aldebaran, an organge giant (aldebaran is probably the most perceptibly orange/red star in the sky) and one of the brightest stars visible.

Quote:
Aldebaran, designated Alpha Tauri (α Tauri, abbreviated Alpha Tau, α Tau), is an orange giant star located about 65 light years from the Sun in the zodiac constellation of Taurus. It is the brightest star in its constellation and usually the fourteenth-brightest star in the nighttime sky, though it varies slowly in brightness between magnitude 0.75 and 0.95. It is likely that Aldebaran hosts a planet several times the size of Jupiter.

And you can also check with a program like Stellarium.

Sorry i was off by one day. This is the correct chart. The moon was even closer that night. Alderban passed behind the moon later that day.

heavens above has tons of interactive data on everything. Planets. Satellites. Moon and Sun. Finding when jupiter is in opposition is useful because that is when it is full disk and you can get good pix of it and its moons.

Aldebaran is close enough to the ecliptic to be occulted by the Moon. Such occultations occur when the Moon's ascending node is near the autumnal equinox. A series of 49 occultations occur starting at 29 January 2015 and ending at 3 September 2018.[34] Each event is visible from a different location on Earth, but always in the northern hemisphere or close to the equator. That means that people in e.g. Australia or South Africa can never observe an Aldebaran occultation. This is due to the fact that Aldebaran is slightly too far south of the ecliptic. A reasonably accurate estimate for the diameter of Aldebaran was obtained during the occultation of 22 September 1978.[35] Aldebaran is in conjunction with the Sun around June 1 of each year.[36]

Quote:
January 26, 2018 – the waxing gibbous moon passes in the vicinity of Aldebaran, an ex-pole star, a famous zodiac star, and the brightest star in the constellation Taurus the Bull. In fact, if you live in Asia, you can actually watch the moon occult – cover over – Aldebaran for a portion of the night tonight. Aldebaran will disappear behind the moon’s dark side and reappear on its illuminated side. So the disappearance will probably be easier to spot than the reappearance.

I just got off the phone with a guy from MUFON Oregon. Very interesting conversation.

He asked me about my three reports, the Moon one, the Prineville one, and the Oregon Eclipse one.

He said the Moon object could be a planet. I learned that the Moon can be "locked" with a planet during a night if they line up like that.
Hes going to look at his star-moon map for more info.

Second, he talked about the Prineville incident. He said it was "Unknown". Oh yeah :awehigh:

Lastly, he talked about my Oregon Eclipse one. There were several issues with this case. One was that I was on shrooms. Second was that I didnt talk to anyone right after the incident. Hes going to think hard about how to label the case.

There ya go. UFO hunting is paying off :yesnod:

If that's what the MUFON guy said then he has no idea about how the sky works.  Where did you even pick up the term "locked?"

Aldebaran wasn't that close to the Moon that night.  Way more likely that it was just something in the Hyades.

October 9, 2017 Oregon PST

4:30, 5:30, 6:30 AM

The star to the left of the moon is the orange giant Alpha Tauri, common name Aldebaran. Approximately 3 degrees from the moon at 4:30, 2 degrees at 6:30.

Aldebaran is one of the easiest stars to identify due to its brightness and distinct orange/red color visible to the naked eye.

Aldebaran didn't rise until about 9:00pm, that night, and three degrees of arc is six times the apparent size of the Moon.

edit:  If he saw the Moon that night then why would you be showing him a chart from more than twelve hours before?  The Moon would have moved about 7 degrees towards his Eastern horizon (with respect to its apparent motion) from where you're showing it by the time that it rose, that night.
