FYI - they grow quick so you could make a good bonsai in a few years, say 6 or 7 years with the right techniques and care.

I have a green leaf Japanese Maple that has naturally small leaves. I'm thinking about trying to bonsai a cutting off it. I need to do more research first, but I am excited about the possibilities.

It should be quite easy to do a cutting from it. ( I know that Japanese Maples and trident maples are easy to get cuttings to take. )
A basic guide to cuttings here ( Australia) is. Hard wood cuttings in winter , new wood cuttings in spring / early summer.
IMO don’t worry about the research, just do it and find out what works.
( put the cuttings in a loose / well draining soil. )
Good luck.
( if it is a big tree you could air- layer it) that’s a very affective way to get a nice Bonsai quickly
