Re: Are single parent households an issue worth looking at? [Re: XUL]
    #24778937 -

Obviously having two people helping split the work of raising a kid is generally better than one. That being said, that doesn't mean that one person CAN'T do it just fine, or that two parents are ALWAYS going to do a good job of it.

I've met plenty of perfectly well adjusted and successful people raised by single parents. And plenty of completely fucked up people raised by two.

End of the day it's the quality of the parenting that matters the most. Is 2 mediocre parents really much better than 1 in most cases? In ideal circumstances they could fill in each others weaknesses, but it's just as likely they could enable each other and make things worse.

2 parents also means twice the chances of at least 1 being a shitty parent and doing serious long term harm.

So yeah "generally" 2 parents will have an easier time of raising kids. But that doesn't mean that single parent families are a "problem" in any way. And in many cases can be the preferable choice... a kid is better off being raised by 1 good parent, than by a 1 good parent and 1 abusive parent, or even 2 mediocre parents. And even a single mediocre parent is probably not gonna do much worse of a job than 2 mediocre ones would.

The website modern feminists want to take down
Facts are scary. Single parent households tripled since the 1960s. However started to stabilize and decrease back around the 2000s

Masked is exactly right. Modern feminism has played an extremely large part in the destruction of the family unit and contributed greatly to the 'deadbeat' dad problem.

We could go into detail on all the specific reasons this came to be if you want.

For now, a youtube video

Invalid poll.  I'm in favor of zero parent homes.  Having parents is modern day slavery.

I agree with this point for the most part - I don't think that two people should exist together in a toxic relationship and household just to avoid the D word - especially when both people are willing co-parents and the environment is less dysfunctional if the parents are separated. Of course, nothing is ever that simple and custody battles get fucking ugly, divorces get messy, the absolute worst of people can come out in those situations and although my folks are still together I can imagine going through a nasty custody battle as a young kid and being stuck in the middle has got lasting negative effects.

I definitely think it's easier and more 'holistic' to have more than one person raising and supporting a child, I think that being a single parent has obstacles unrelated to income and time that a dual parent household don't face - just the question of how to continue your own life, meet people, date, etc, without bringing anymore instability into the life of someone who is changing and growing and trying to figure out who they are in general.

That being said,

My cousin is 37 and recently had her first(and only) child via artificial insemination after deciding that she wasn't going to continue waiting for the right dude to come around and start a family with her. She was a well earning doctor, extremely independent and well adjusted with a huge supportive family. I am happy for her and I don't think she did anything wrong - she someone who understands the weight of raising a child fully and will pour every ounce of herself into giving her little girl the best possible life she can create - that is her mission in life and at this point the ideal time is now or never.

I think i woukd of rather had my parents spilt up at a young age then beat and abuse each other my entire childhood

That shit fucked me up

I think there is multiple reasons that single parent households have made a rise is

A few being the economy and inflation from the rise of central banking in the early 1900s
Big macs will cost 10 dollars eventually becaise of this system
Which effects familys and makes poor people poorer

The rise of population and how much we cater to laziness as a society

And other factors that aremt immediately coming to mind
But i have to head to work

Ill check back in here later

Interesting, this timeline correlates nicely with incarceration rates.

How do you prevent divorce though? That's the number one cause of single parenthood.

Lots of things have to change in order for American families to be better off.

It's not the principal that hurts children so much. On the contrary children that grow up with two parents or one parent and an aunt or uncle or grandparent available of one sex turn out as average as other children. The issue is the amount of time a single parent can dedicate to their child while still providing for them.

You already divide the parent time in half and then make that one parent work twice as hard. It destroys any solid guidance and remodeling a child might get from a parent.

Economy changing would improve everyone's lives. Especially childrens.

But no one wants to start a "think of the children" campaign for an economic revolution so :ohwell: guess we're just fucked.

what is your evidence that children of same sex couples or with aunt's and uncle's who help out turn out normal? I'm not saying you are wrong I just like researching this kind of thing.

also this poll needs STAL. I didn't vote on the intervention ones. yeah I guess it would make sense to intervene but I don't think the government should even be involved in marriage. or anything really I think the government sucks at everything and regulating everything is a mistake.

I think we just need to avoid normalizing divorce in our culture.

imo we need to avoid normalizing it (too late but still)  people these days go into marriage with divorce in the back of their mind because it's much easier and more accepted now. then when it gets rough they run to their escape route. at that point no amount of positive change or counselling will help because one or both spouses have their mind made up.

The reasons for single-parent families have also changed. In the mid-twentieth century, most single-parent families came about because of the death of a spouse. In the 1970s and 1980s, most single-parent families were the result of divorce. In the early 2000s, more and more single parents have never married. Many of these single parents live with an adult partner, sometimes even the unmarried father of their child. These families are counted by the Census Bureau as single-parent families, although two adults are present. Still other families are counted as single-parent families if the parents are married, but one is away for an extended period, for example, on military deployment.

I still think the effects of mass incarceration in creating single families should be considered too.

You got me thinking... What would a society be like where we didn't have "parents", but rather all of the adult population took part in raising our young? Each child would be passed around at regular intervals, like a week or a month. The child would get a changing environment to grow used to - something I think is already becoming an asset in our society. Kids would all get all of the experience: everything from the loving nuclear family through to the shitty crack-addicted single parent.

As "parents" we would all get time off to pursue other interests - we would all have 18 years of child raising to do, but we could spread that out over the ages of 20-60 so we would only be parenting for half the time.

Maybe state run programs could be an answer. Or volunteer agencies who spread morals/culture.

I have no idea either.

This is a tricky one.
