What brings these thoughts to your attention on this particular day?

I was just telling someone that I had started learning German In the past, I love those little coincidences, though I will say they are more common when I mention things to a particular group of people, but that's another story.

The best way to learn a language is to immerse yourself in it, you have to constantly be around the language.

I watch movies in the foreign languages which I am learning to speak or which I understand fairly frequently, its a great method of learning how to have fluid conversation in these languages. Though for some reason I have to do this with subtitles on, when you can see the word as it's being said it really helps, it also improves your ability to read and write another language.

Als iemand zich afvraagt hoe de Nederlandse taal eruit ziet op schrift: nou, zoals dit dus. De uitspraak van Nederland verschilt heel erg, er zijn zoveel dialecten dat mensen in een naburig dorp vaak moeite hebben elkaar te verstaan. Dit is iets van de Oude Wereld, je hebt dat minder in landen met een korte en expansieve geschiedenis zoals de Verenigde Staten en Australië.

Nou, kijk, Nederlands, dat doe je zo! Petje af voor diegenen die het van huis uit niet spreken en het toch kunnen volgen.

40% of the u.s. spoke german then ww1 happened and it was banned and it stayed out of schools ever since then

I've never been to Amsterdam or any place with coffee shops. I always wanted to go and eat hashish.  I'm a little bit too young to have caught the scene in the US of A.  My mom bought a kilo of red Lebanese hash before I started smoking.  I found a little in the storage chamber of her hash pipe and smoked it and it was a top quality stone, really spacey and visual. 
I'd love to go to a place where everyone was a stoner and had tried psilocybin.  In the Hollywood hills and Hollywood there is heavy use of drugs.  I also lived in Santa Cruz, CA and visited San Francisco many times and both of those places were havens for drug use.  Santa Cruz was probably the most tripped out.  There was almost zero gang activity unless you ventured into the Mexican part and most of the kids into gangs were mainly after the drugs.  I never got hassled by a gangster when I was in Santa Cruz.  That was almost twenty years ago, though, and I heard they shut down the street sales and Grateful Dead scene.  It was a trip.  Kids would come up behind you and say "kind nugs" or "doses."  I used to cop a weight eighth every day so I'd get a different strain every day. 
Do they have any sort of gang problem in Holland?  I mean, do kids hassle you on the street for no apparent reason?  That's the kind of shit I want to avoid.  That behavior plagues the big cities here in the states.  I live in a small farm town and they don't grow gangster kids out here.  I will take a trip to Holland when I am ready to retire and think about it.

I live in Washington state with the legal ganja.  Even before that, most of the kids had tried smoking ganja.  There is so much music about drugs.  Cannabis has been painted in a positive light and most of the kids have tried it.

I liked holland when I visited, they have everything you could want. Lizard, houses may be cheaper in spain but you can't get one for "peanuts" I have a friend there who priced houses for someone and they were not so cheap. Out in the country they are probably cheaper. If they were dirt cheap people would go there to buy and rent them out.

France seems nice, if you speak the language they are not unfriendly at all. Germany too is nice, they are tolerant to people who speak bad german and many speak english, same in holland. Italy is cheap, you need to bring your own money not look for work, same in spain.

Nagger, that is german, dutch is similar somewhat. I see asante knows a little german too. I could learn dutch fairly quickly having a basic understanding already of german. I can pick out words and sometimes understand what they say in dutch but not always. Learning german or dutch knowing only english is going to be hard since the grammar is difficult. Polish or hungarian is going to be super hard since they are not latin based.

Go to a poor country if you already have an income or money. Go to a rich country to work if you have the skills. In saudi arabia you can make $30 an hour doing most anything. It may not be pleasant to live there. South america is cheap to live, spanish is easy to learn but it takes work.

LW, we have the same deals in usa. I myself bought some houses for pennies on the dollar in foreclosure from banks and they did need a lot of work. Govt has programs where you can get a house even cheaper if you agree to live in it and fix them up. Probably the same in other countries.

I know he speaks dutch, I'm well aware of the difference but he tosses in a few words of german now and then so I assume he speaks a little, perhaps I assume too much. German is indeed latin based, not sure where you get your misinformation from. Most european languages are, including english, spanish, french, german, greek, etc. That does not mean they don't use words from other languages including roman, of course they do. Hungarian and polish I mentioned because they are not indo european based. Even russian has some latin roots. Basque has no roots in any other known language though they have adopted some european words

I grew up in Hollywood/Los Angeles so I have experience with immigrants who have little or no comprehension of the language.  That's a place I never want to get stuck in.  I studied a little German on youtube and a lot of the words are similar to English words.  I haven't checked out Dutch much.  I know that if I work hard I can gain fluency to get by and maybe one day thrive.

Yes, many languages are considered "germanic" however my point was that latin along with other languages was one of the roots of german along with many other languages. Here is a quote from wikipedia

"A portion of German words are derived from Latin and Greek"

Just as I said

"Latin is a highly inflected language, with, three distinct genders, seven noun cases, four verb conjugations, four verb principal parts, six tenses, three persons, three moods, two voices, two aspects and two numbers."

German too has  three distinct genders, 4 cases or four verb principal parts, six tenses, two voices, and other similarities. Deny it all you want but its true.

I understand most German that bears resemblance to the core language (not heavy dialects) but when I write it I always get the grammar wrong.

As a kid I watched English and German children's programming and through it, picked up the languages before I got them in school, its like this with many Dutch people.

When high my best buddy and I tend to erupt in semi-Deutsch, a deliberate mixup of Dutch and Deutsch languages to hilarious effect, exploiting similarities and differences between the languages.
