Renewable Energy v. Fossil Fuels: Steel
    #24731550 -

How do you feel about renewable energy vs fossil fuels? Why?

Quote:
Life without steel is inconceivable. The electricity that powers one's electric alarm clock is generated in highly efficient power station turbines made with steel; the shower tray in the bathroom is made of steel; the cutlery, pots and sink in the kitchen too; and much of the car is also steel.
http://en.stahl-online.de/index.php/topics/application/steel-in-everyday-life/

Quote:
Many experts suggest this means we need to completely phase out fossil fuels and replace them with renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. ... This informs the widespread view that fossil fuels can be more or less “swapped out” for renewables, without significant economic consequences.
http://theconversation.com/phasing-out-fossil-fuels-for-renewables-may-not-be-a-straightforward-swap-54108

Quote:
Global steel production is dependent on coal. 60% of the steel produced today uses coal. Metallurgical coal – or coking coal – is a vital ingredient in the steel making process. World crude steel production was 1.6 billion tonnes in 2016.
https://www.worldcoal.org/coal/uses-coal/how-steel-produced

Quote:
Ontario completed a shift away from coal between 2003 and 2014; a major household energy programme in Indonesia took just three years to move two-thirds of the population from kerosene stoves to LPG stoves; and France's nuclear power programme saw supply rocket from four per cent of the electricity supply market in 1970 to 40 per cent in 1982.

Each of these cases has in common strong government intervention coupled with shifts in consumer behaviour, often driven by incentives and pressure from stakeholders.

We will run out of non renewable in 100 or so years, nuclear isn't so feasible cause the plants cost way too much. Solar and wind and water will need to be worked on to proper efficiency while we deplete non renewables

We could probably get away with some sort of industrial hemp based product in replacement of steel. Though, not very conductive, electrically speaking. There are better materials for electricity.

IMHO, small potatoes. What we should really be focusing 'our attention, as a species, is space rocks. Asteroids, big ones, global killers. Hell, even small ones can cause devastation if it makes it through enough atmosphere at a high enough velocity without vaporizing.

We need to start looking up and reconnect with those stars, our true parents.

You will always need coking coal for steel. In Canada at least 3/4s of the coal mined is for thermal use. That can easily be done away with and replaced with renewables.

Same that you will need a certain amount of oil production for lubricants for machinery. Always. There will be a baseline amount of oil that needs to be extracted for the rest of time to keep the machines running. Like wind turbines for example.

Yes we can live without steel, yes we can produce steel without coal, Yes to everything.

It's gonna be one hell of a challenge though.

Coke is merely the reducing agent in producing steel. You start with iron oxide, the carbon in the coke takes the oxygen molecules away under heat producing co2 and iron. The iron in turn absorbs some of the carbon becoming steel.

Yeah there must be other ways of supplying the carbon.

So what if we need coal for steel. The discussion about coal isn't about using it to make steel, it's about using it to generate electricity. why is OP muddying the conversation with straw men?

Actually the carbon monoxide is the reducing agent.

If anything, even if coal were 100% indispensable for making steel, the best way to ensure future steel production would be to not use any coal for anything else.

They will not run out of coal anytime soon. Don't you worry about that. Renewables are not capable at this time to replace fossil fuels. Fusion is the best hope but it seems far off

A nifty invention would be a paint that makes electricity. Put down one layer, it dries then a second layer which is translucent. Top and bottom layers are the two conductors and when the sun hits it you draw off electricity. No more bulky expensive panels, just 2 coats of paint. The whole house would produce juice not just some panels on the roof. The whole roof, the walls everything. Some is stored for nighttime use. You stay on the grid in case you get days with no sun.

Put it on your car and no need to charge that electric beast. Put it on your jacket and it could circulate cool air.

Solar and wind are already cheaper than coal.

Can they work continuously though?

The only renewable resource that is a constant energy source, is nuclear.

Ontario phased out coal. They are now around 62% nuclear, 35% hydro, and then wind/solar.

Yeah it always comes down to this damn money thing.

If only the government decided that money has no value aside what the federal reserve assigns it and decided to just print more money.

...oh right they did that already but it was only to keep money from collapsing.

Much more important to keep arbitrary currency value than long term resources viable that actually do have a solid value and in turn is the only real value the american dollar will ever have.

But then that's why we have almost all of our oil is being held in reserve. So that when the middle east and lesser places start running dry all our power will be very tangible and held at home while we remain pretty much the only country capable of maintaining a large modern technology reliant military. At least for a little while. Until that well runs dry too.

Pretty sure they plan on having nuclear war by then though.

I see no point in commenting on steel because I don't really know shit about it but if it truly needs coal to be produced, just as plastic needs oil, then that's all the more reason we should be using as much energy as possible from other sources.
