Should I renew my virus scanner?
    #6584916 - 02/19/07 11:32 AM (17 years, 15 days ago)

My anti-virus program (NOD32) is expiring in a few days and I'm wondering whether or not I should renew it because the only time it's ever helped me out is when I've clicked on some malicious porn site by accident...and I'm not looking at hardcore porn anymore ()...

Let me just add that if I do end up continuing to use virus protection that I'm not gonna use one of the free ones--I'm willing to pay for re-assurance.

No its a waste of money. Just download free stuff. Try Lavasoft AdAware and/or Spybot. If you have Limewire or whatever there's a good shot you can find the usernames/passwords for the versions that cost $.

I guess they only come in handy if some nerd you know has a grudge against you or if you're involved in a lot of sketchy file-sharing (or searching for porn in the porn matrices).

I'm in a real pissing match with Norton right now. I chose not to renew the subscription to my (now)non-internet computer, but after spamming me for a few months to renew, I got a credit card bill and saw that they took it upon themselves to renew it without my authorization. In fact, they charged my credit card, but didn't even renew the subscription. I spent an hour on their website trying to report it, but "I was charged but you didn't renew" wasn't an option, and they have no way to get a real human that actually speaks english on the phone. I turned it over to Visa, and now Norton is challenging the chargeback. Criminals.

Norton's anti-virus program gets negative reviews too--that's why when I got my new laptop I did a little research and went for one of the 1337 esoteric ones--NOD32.

Try getting Avast! anti virus. It's completely free.

AVG is an anti-virus program, there is no spyware or adware in it.

does no one use F-Prot, I've been using it for years, back in the days of dos and
BBSs, it's never failed me, it's a heuristic scanner, it's 100% more effective
than anything you have to update files for every week
