computer problems

:sigh:

my computer is having problems. its difficult and tedious to power it up.
It takes several attempts of turning it on, (it then freezes at a certain point), then turning it off. Each time it appears as if the computer gets a little farther in starting up, which reminds me of a car warming up. After about the 4th or 5th try, i can make it to the screen where i can pick "Normal mode, Safe mode, Logged, Step by step... etc." because my computer wasnt properly shut down. A couple more attempts of turning on and off the computer and i make it back to this screen. I always choose safe mode and let it load up all the way. This usually does the trick if the computer hasnt frozen by now. I just go to start, shut down, and click restart and it usually starts right up in normal mode without any problems.

This whole situation is hard to explain and id appreciate any ideas or suggestions. Sometimes when it freezes, it makes odd noises that you know cant be good for your computer.  :nonono:

So, im thinking it might be a hardware problem because once Windows is successfully loaded... i have no problems.
Btw - i know that turning your computer on and off (using the method of holding the power button in for 10 seconds) is and can be harmful to your computer. But, its the only way for me to even start this beast.  :frown:

My guess... dying hard drive. If the noise is a clunk-clunk-clunk or a loud screech, like a bird in a blender, then most likely hard drive.

its not a clunk clunk...

but a "screech" could be used to describe the noise it sometimes makes.

Screech from hard drive is usually caused by a crashed head scraping along a drive platter.

a screech would more indicate a fan is clogged or the berrings have gone out to me (depending on the type of screech). If your HD is going out, chances are after several atempts to boot, the data on the drive would become unsuable and you wouldnt get ANYWHERE! I would recomend removing your case cover (with the power off) and then turning on your computer. Examine the CPU fan and see if it is making the noise. If it is, its possible your CPU is overheating... that could be the entire problem right there, and thats a cheep fix... 5 bucks for a new fan.
Anyway, open up your case. Find out where the sound is coming from... it shouldnt be too hard once you can look inside. That will help all of us give you a better diagnostic.

I had problems very similar to yours when my HD dropped a head last year. If it's an IBM Deskstar, that seals the deal. Those drives are known for mechanical failures.

its a gateway.

im going to do as suggested and open it up and turn it on and off until the sound comes up. ill then locate the source of the sound and if i cant identify the part from which its emitting, then ill take a picture and post it.
ill probably post it just to be sure.

what suffer was saying makes a lot of sense. Its odd because, each time it loads up a little farther...

Nah, clogged (and dead) fans are silent 'cause they aren't spinning.

Not really.  Not much is written on boot, only read.  He may loose a few log files on bootup, but these are for info only, so their loss is no loss.

My guess is still hard drive, but a fan could also be the issue.  Knowing where the sound is coming from will determine the problem.  :smile:
