This is the reason computer errors are called "bugs"
    #2884900 - 07/13/04 05:31 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Well, maybe not. It was just a provocative thread title.

Perhaps they'll start calling computer failures "rats" or "rodents" from now on.

However, I do think that the term "bug" came from a moth or some insect stuck in a computer, which caused errors back in the day. Someone can correct me on this if I'm wrong.

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

The story I have always heard was that a moth (wing) got caught between the switch contacts of an electromagnetic relay on an early computer. When the program the computer was running stopped working, they techs started looking for a hardware problem... what they found was the moth. When they removed it from the computer the program started to work and the term 'debugging the computer' was born.

... although I have never found a rat in a computer, I did work on a job once were we kept having network failures... turned out that rats were under the raised floor eating the old cables that had been there since the moon missions.

Yes, rats have been known to nibble on wires, namely my old car wires...

As I recall, this is correct. As Suess wrote, back in the bad 'ol days when computers had old, huge contacts (almost as big as your fist) and took up enough space to fill a warehouse, moths and other insects would frequently get stuck in the contacts, hence the term 'bug'.
