Building/buying a portable cleanroom... advise?
    #24655804 -

I have a collection of monotubs I tend to in my apartment, with close friends unaware of its existence. I use a still air box, but I find my G2G transfers more prone to contaminations than my successful petri dishes, so I was thinking of having a portable cleanroom, something like a martha greenhouse with a little table for my SAB.... or could I go all the way and wear a suit and forgo the SAB?

Has anyone done this? I'm willing to expend the setup and take down efforts for the Down Low status.

Thanks... T

ive seen shroomerites who have sabs inside zip up tents inside basements.

but the contamination is caused from something else so having a cleanroom/tent wont solve THAT problem 100%

and friends would now ask 'whats with that tent thing?' instead of 'i never noticed your ugly cut up plastic bins before'

If you're prepared to go those sort of lengths, I would've thought a DIY flowhood would be more convenient. Unless you had most of the necessaries kicking around already, I don't see how it could work out a whole lot more expensive.

I would take the greenhouse down. Its only twice a month I need to do this.

I dislike a lamar hood because its big and weird and hard to explain, but as it stands now, I have to hide my SAB, so, maybe its no different.

How much will a lamar hood cost? For a large-ish one to fill large 4 quart grain bags... Can anyone advise a filter size? I've heard people complaining about small filters... I'd like to avoid that. Amazon? Are there filters that say they are 99.98% but actually aren't?

I'm one of them and agree 100% with this statement.

i built a positive pressure box with one of those 99.98 walmart hepas and its worked fine for me. i always do a control and the plus side is if the filter seems to be causing problems u can just turn it off and use the sab. i have a friend who says the 99.98 arent enough. i know it does .3microns, spores are 30 and smoke is 1. i hear that u need like .00 something to filter out things like trich. anyway positive pressure box

I do like the idea of a positive pressure box. I work with a SAB with holes in the side (with a small tunnel of plastic) and long rubber gloves not attached to the box. Its worked great for years with agar dishes... very little contamination. But I am struggling with G2G transfers now. My initial thought was to make my room cleaner, because I live in a warehouse and its hard to clean (too big)

lol i made my positive pressure just because of how hard it was doing large numbers of g2g in a sab. the gloves and pvc  or watever sleeves take up too much space. i have a dedicated clean room i made by hanging 6mil plastic wall to wall got hepa filters running 24/7 i also spray alot of chlorine and peroxide in the air as well as run a uvc light prior to entry, it helps alot always good to have a dedicated space for such work. ive actually done a few open air transfers with no contam. anyways heres a pic of my +P box. think its a 12x6 filter, 45$ cant remember the brand

I like it. I like the idea of a clean room in addition to a SAB or P-box or Laminar hood. Just seems smart to not have a cloud of evil swirl around your attempted safe place.

This is all non sense.

Just happen to be doing some SAB work tonight, so here are pictures of my "portable lab".  The only purpose of the curtain is to eliminate drafts in the work area.  It hangs from hooks that a are screwed into the floor joists.  I also close the air vents from the HVAC and work in a SAB.  This doesn't even take five minutes to set up.  Everything gets put in a closet when I'm done, nice and discreet.  A permanent lab space would be great, but gonna wait until I own my own house, and start growing more gourmets.

My contamination rate is really low with this set up.  It all comes down to technique and STILL air.

I find that g2g goes a lot smoother in a SAB with a smaller master. I use pint jars as masters and then use 1 to inoculate 5 quarts of spawn. The speed of the g2g is the same as 1 quart to 10 quarts but is much easier to handle with more space in the box and more headroom via smaller masters.

The pint masters also colonize much faster than a quart will if you inoculate with wedges.

Nice set up. Agreed that technique makes all the difference.  I used to reach over my open dishes all the time. I still switch between +pressure and SAB depending on what im doing. I id like to get a 2x4' hepa to make a flow hood like my buddies here

Get a 200qt Sab. Stack two at jars and still have a few inches of headroom.

I bet millet pints would be amazing masters.

:takingnotes: I've worked with millet before. Too me it never looks fully colonized. Also did quarts of it

I have done plenty of logs with it. It does look different to wheat or rye when colonized. Fantastic nock points.
