Why can't Japanese people handle alcohol...?
    #2453888 - 03/20/04 09:54 AM (20 years, 12 days ago)

Welll... the parties over... I'm sitting at my computer and there are Japanese guys and girls sleeping all over my house (I've drunk 3 times what they have tonight... I am drunk, but not DRUNK)

Why do you think this is? Is must be a racial tolerance thing (but they have as long - or longer - a history of alcohol use as Europeans)

In Australia, I am a normal guy... (not a '2 can screamer', but certainly not Superman).

Maybe I should organise a 'tag relay' team to go drinking with me...

Well it might be related to their diet, they are often pretty scrawny. I didnt know they had a longer history of alcohol drinkin than the white man... white people have drinking longer than any other race in history IMO.

But if you compare the western to the eastern culture you'll see alcohol is alot more established as a part of our culture than it is for the japanese.  I guess they could smoke us out cold on opium before they even feel a buzz

You might be right... I know that Japanese have been brewing 'O-Sake' for a LOOONG time, but I don't know how long... Alcohol has a very important role in ancient and modern Japanese culture (very uptight people... when you're pissed, all the 'sosial rules' are suspended... great safety valve)

Yeah my guess is body mass.  The average American is fat, the average Japanese is not.  They are short and thin.  Also they eat better than us, rice, more veggies, not to mention TONS of fish, etc.  I think that the greasy food we eat helps us soak up alcohol better.  Think about it, if you were going to enter a drinkin contest, which would you rather have in your stomach, a 1/2lb cheeseburger and french fries or sushi?

I don't think it has to do with racial tolerance or anything, they have been drinking saki for a long time.  It is funny tho, I have drank with japanese ppl before, and they always get real fucked up real quick and it makes me feel like a lush cause my tolerance is higher and I dont even drink that often.  Japanese ppl are real fun drunks too, they get all loud and obnoxious and silly, quite different than when they are sober

because they believe its appropriate behavior when your drunk....it is if you look at how lively their parties are.... for the hour they last prior to everyone passing out

I agree prisoner...

You don't rally know a Japanese unless you marry one or get drunk with one (I suggest getting pissed with one...  it requires less long-term commitment  )

I agree they have a personality change, when sober they are always so polite and quiet and reserved.  Its fun to watch that all get chucked out the window when alcohol is involved

I have often seen that people that are more reserved and shy when sober are usually the ones who get more loud and obnoxious when drunk. It seems like they are so happy to break out of their shell that they explode when they come out. Actually I'm pretty sure thats what happens... but japanese take pleasure and gratitude in the smallest things, really cool people.
Imagine tripping with a japanese person, just imagine their awe and accent combined together, lol!

The trouble is (especially here in the countryside) that japanese are so super-conservative that I am very careful about mentioning tripping or any such thing (even though it was legal until 18 mths ago).

I have smoked with Japanese in Australia, but never here.

For some reason I cant imagine tripping being a familiar term with the japanese. I've got the impression that they take work and school very seriously but they are also generally curious and open minded about things, especially when you are one on one with them. They are very polite and will most probably listen you out if you get on the shrooming topic some japanese.

I have let it be known (gently) amongst my adult students that in Australia, Pot isn't a huge deal... no responses, though (and a lot of these folks are my friends)... they just have never been exposed to it (in the average Japanese's mind, Pot = Drugs = Heroin = etc They don't question authority and the government in the way we do)

I think people of Asian or American Indian ancestry have lower amounts of an enzyme that is involved in ethanol metabolism. In the liver, ethanol is oxidized to form acetaldehyde, which gives you a hangover. A second oxidation step converts acetaldehyde into acetic acid.

This process takes place while you are drinking. If it didn't, your body would acummulate alcohol at a much faster rate. This is why some people with liver problems get drunk very easily.

On a sort of related topic, while on holiday in Thailand last year I witnessed a pair of Koreans drink 4 bottles of rough Thai whiskey. They seemed OK!

A lot of people I met, upon learning my wife is Japanese, would say...  "That's cool...  I met a Chinese girl once..."

To which I would reply, "You're American aren't you?  Hey!  That's cool...  I met a Russian once..."
