I'm in Japan!
    #3021960 - 08/19/04 04:47 AM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I just wanted to say hi to everyone. I'm in Yokohama right now, right downtown! It's really cool. Having a great time. I passed my Aikido test, so I am very relieved! Got a week of really good training too! Now we are just hanging out sightseeing and stuff. Drinking WAY too much. These people love to drink. Anyways, gotta get ready for dinner and do my laundry, just wanted to say hi to everyone. Got free internet access in the lobby, so I might check back later.

haha sweet!!!!

good times :sun:

--------------------
Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

Wow that is so awesome.

I always wanted to go to Japan. The techonology, the culture, the sights -- it's all too perfect! Enjoy your stay, and for pete's sake please take some pictures for those of us who are less fortunate to relish.

Hey, what's up Adom? It's been an incredible time so far. I still have about another week here too. I've been to all kinds of awesome places. The first 2 days, we stayed at the Nippon Budokan, which is like the biggest martial arts college in Japan. Many different martial arts are studied there. I also had the opportunity to train with Kawajiri sensei who was a student of the founder of Aikido back in the day. Lots of great sightseeing too. Went to many shrines and temples, and rode the Tokyo subway all over the place. It has been incredible!

Hey nicechrisman, it's great to hear from you! I was talking to my Aikido friend yesterday and told him that I knew someone online studying Aikido in Japan. His eyes lit right up and he asked which form you do....I said I don't know! So which is it? And I forgot to say: I AM SO JEALOUS!!!!!!!!

Siyanora!

I study Aikikai Aikido. Most of my background is in Nishio style Aikikai, but I've been learning alot studying with Kawajiri sensei, who is also Aikikai, but quite a bit different from Nishio style. What style does your friend study?

He says he doesn't know....he's been doing it for a long time and everytime he broaches the subject with the instructors or the people at the school, he gets diverted.  So he doesn't even bring it up anymore.  He says that now he learns more from the long time students than from his sensei.  I will tell him what you said though, he was really interested.  He is a fellow Japanophile and has most of his house looking just like a traditional Japanese house- the antique furnishings and wallhangings/calligraphy, at least.

That's cool. It's all Aikido, but there are some differences in the different styles. I got to see some videos here, and my teachers explained what the differences were in the different styles, but it is all wonderful. Alot of people have studied a number of different styles too, so they sorta teach a mix of them.

It is a dream come true. I've been taking lots of pictures, but I don't have a scanner at home, so I don't know when I'll be able to post any of them. At least I will have them though. I've been keeping a travel journal too, which I think will be very helpful in remembering everything. Thank you for sharing my enthousiasm. This is such a wonderful place. I think I will come back in a year or 2 to take my blackbelt test.

Yep, this place is awesome indeed. Rode the Tokyo lightrail to Kamakura yesterday. It's the old capitol of Japan. The history here is amazing. Saw some more awesome temples and shrines. Good times for sure. Too bad I have to leave in a few days  :frown:

Went out for Chinese in Yokohama's Chinatown, and got rather intoxicated with a Japanese guy who is a friend of the family I am visiting with. We went and did karaoke. I was dissapointed that they didn't have any GD or Phish. They actually had a pretty extesive collection of modern American music, but didn't have either. I sang The Beatle's "Only a Northern song", CCR "Have you ever seen the rain?", The Beatles " Here Comes The Sun", Led Zep "The Immigrant Song", Bob Marley "Waiting in Vain",and one or 2 others. Karaoke is a little different here. You rent a room with yout group and choose songs, where in the US when I have done it, it was in front of the whole bar. I think it's a little easier to cut loose this way. It was a great time. Please excuse any type-os as I am quite drunk!
