I figure that whatever factors are common to the dogs involved in fatal attacks or maimings probably are not necessarily shared by all members of their respective breeds. IMO the "it's 100% nurture and 0% nature" explanation for trends by breed in serious attacks hasn't been supported here with very solid arguments though, and I think it is quite possible that there is a genetic component to the trend. Again though, such a genetic factor could well even be absent in most individuals of the breed, and still contribute to a disproportionate rate of serious attacks for that breed in the stats.

The idea that bad owners are drawn to certain breeds with a reputation for being tough does make sense as a partial explanation, but I don't think it really makes sense as a sole explanation for such extreme disparities between breeds as are seen in those stats that were posted. Any medium sized to large dog is physically capable of killing and maiming humans, and for any given breed there are going to be owners who abuse them or fail to train them properly.

Since I mentioned it I am curious of how dog attacks are in other countries. I mean countries similar to the US that don't have loads of strays and packs of starving abandoned dogs and animal cruelty laws.

Cuz as far as a culture goes we seem to be one of the most violence prone societies in the "free world" and I'm wondering if that could correlate with our pets being more violent as well. Or if we actually manage to have less attacks than similar countries due to some factors I haven't considered.

Psh science

There is a measure of science to anecdotal reports. Similar ones have been used for the statistics quoted in this thread.

Psi: yes there is a genetic factor and I think it could be because pits have been used and bred for dog fighting for forever now, and that's still going on. Whereas all the other dangerous breeds, Rottweilers pinchers shepherds and chows have all become primarily family dogs in the last few decades. Their role of aggression and selective breeding for agression has died down alot in the last generation or 2. In pits aggression absolutely was bred into the breed and there is such a thing as genetic memory.

There's a reason Labrador retrievers are considered the go to dog for a family with young children. They have always been bred for loyalty and obedience.

The truth is pit bulls are high maintenance dogs. They need an experienced responsible owner than knows what the fuck they're doing. And unfortunately the kind of person that is most likely to desire and pay well for the breed is the kind of person who probably shouldn't even be trusted to be responsible for themselves (my teenaged brother included.)

.....that post honestly made me cringe as to how kennel workers may treat these beasts too.

Right because when a weimy is half a second from tearing a lab's throat out, I'm really concerned about its hips

your post is merely a reflection of your ignorance of what it is like to actually work in a kennel

I really wonder how many people who love to spit all these statistics actually have owned one of the many breeds considered a "pit bull". If someone hasn't owned the breed, their input can only go so far in my mind.

I used to, his name was Bongo, and he was gentle and I had a good experience with him. He wasn't even neutered, and he was still pretty chill.

With that said, my sister's dog was also viciously attacked and almost killed by a pit bull, and I am still one of those people that exercises more caution and fear of pit bulls in general. I would definitely never own a pit bull around small children or other pets.

Here is a picture.

You don't ask a woman how much she weighs fool  :snub:

G: how did your sister's dog get attacked? did you know the dog that attacked it? even if it was perfectly trained it shouldn't have been loose. That's part of what we're talking about when we say it's the owner's fault. Not often these days a dog does bad things because its owner beats it, it's often cuz the owner is ignorant and/or irresponsible.

No one that has experience with dogs that are the size and have the strength of a pit keeps it on a normal leash or a light chain. Alot of people seem to think they're Labradors with a bad reputation. And they can be 10x sweeter than any lab. But then I've also been dragged down an entire flight of steps by one of those sweetheart pits after he saw a cat.

I probably won't get a pit bull myself either. But it's not cuz I think they're bad dogs. They need an owner that is more capable than me. Between my health and random bouts of depression I'm doubtful I'd be able to give any high maintenance dog the attention and activity it needs.

Difference between me and alot of pit owners, alot of pet owners in general, is I have the self awareness to admit that.

Nobody knows the dog nor the owner of the dog that attacked it. It was a stray pit bull that was unleashed and roaming around, and it came out of nowhere and suddenly attacked my sister's dog while she was walking her dog.

My sister realized her dog was going to die if she kept him on the leash, so she let go, knowing that he's a fast little critter, and his only chance of survival would be to run away fast.

Poor thing ran away and it took her hours to find him. He was hiding inside a bush whimpering when he was found. He's only a 10lb dog so he had to be stitched up for several injuries at the vet, including a big picture wound in his neck.

I have seen videos of even leashed pitbulls biting dogs however.

What kind of leash are you supposed to put that sort of dog on, a choke chain with spikes or something? I thought you weren't supposed to use those on dogs?

Are you supposed to put them on one of these?

So what's your opinion of dogs that bite humans or other animals, Cookie? Do you think they should be put down? Or just the owner should be fined or something?

Obviously if they bite once there's a chance they're going to do it again. But since you say dogs biting are just dogs doing dog things, what do you think should happen to dogs that do that?

Re: Banning dog breeds ultimate racism [Re: Crystal G]

They make similar collars that apply pressure to the wind pipe without choking them. A pit bull that really wants something will choke itself to death on a normal choke chain. A thick nylon webbed collar is what I'd recommend. Can't for the life of me think of what the "safe" choke collar is called. Maybe someone else knows.

And use a thick chain or webbed nylon leash. None of that thin aluminum shit.

Glad your sister's little dog was okay. She was right to let it run. Dog could have easily killed it otherwise.

As for your second post, it depends. On the severity of the bite first of all. If the dog was fenced or chained, if whatever got attacked was trespassing, if the owner knew the dog was violent and neglected to take appropriate cautions like a muzzle.

I wish we could establish good rehabilitation centers for dogs but few places in the country have one. In a minor bite (draws blood but at most needs no more than a few stitches) standard training course and at worst case a muzzle would be appropriate. If the dog mauls someone, and especially if it's not the first incident, the choice would have to be putting it in one of these specialized rehab centers (who themselves will put down an animal that is beyond hope, which is very rare.) or for the owner to put it down. I don't think that's fair but the owner proves they can't handle the dog and anyone the owner gives the dog to is unlikely to be able to as well. And shelters are obviously not a better option.

But yes. Fine the shit out of them. If the law allows up to a 500 fine for taking handicap parking then YES someone who lets their dog lose or is unable to control their animal in reasonable circumstances should be fined. And those fines should be stacked for everything they're done wrong and the severity of the injury. Maybe then people will stop thinking they know what the fuck they're doing when they're "making a guard dog" that will get out and maul someone and cost them thousands of dollars.

They should be fined if it kills someone elses pet too.

Though that too depends on if the animal came into the home or fenced property.

More importantly animal control should follow up with an owner of a dog that attacked someone or another pet if they keep the dog. They should see what has been done to remedy the situation.

But ofc in most places animal control is severely under funded if it exists at all. So if I were lawmakers that would be the first thing I did, put more money into animal control to hire more people and give them better training.

I don't take dog bites lightly. I've been bit at least 3 times and the last I walked away with blood dripping from all over my face. Every single time it could have been prevented by me paying attention to the warning signs and taking them more seriously.

A dog should not bite someone no.
But the dog also can't be expected not to defend itself and its family. That's all I'm saying. Understanding their behavior could prevent alot of that.

But a dog without a master is a different story. In that case they should not be loose to begin with. When they're on their own sometimes instinct takes over for everything and that's when they will display hunter/predator type behavior.

If your dog is known to be aggressive to other dogs then keep the fucking monster on a god damn leash! If you can't control your dog 100% then I will in the situation. The last dog off leash that attacked my leashed shiba (at my side btw) got an 18" construction prybar across it's face. Leash your fucking dogs if you don't like aggressive humans reacting to your shitty off leash and out of control dogs! Fuck!!! The last pair of off leash dogs that decided to harass me and my dog got their feet stomped on and a pissed off asshole owner who almost got murdered by me. FUCK OFF LEASH DOGS!

It's hard for me to not love pits or just dogs in general. A pit bull off a leash gets my attention but I definitely don't sweat it. I grew up around pits and their ghetto, ignorant owners. I think that's why I like them so much. Boxers, poodles and dalmations though. Those are the breeds that I stay attentive around.

That dude was an asshole.

I'd hit a dog if he went after me or my pet. I'd stab it if I had to.

But some people over react. My lab was chillin in the yard on a private mountain and this lady came up walking her little pom pom. He ran up to them to say hi. He had no problem with other dogs but the lady over reacted, picked up the little dog and started screaming and throwing rocks at my dog. Of course the way she was acting immediately changed my dogs perspective from seeing them as potential friends and play mates to a threat. He circled them barking with his fur all sticking up.

Again dog behavior should be taught in schools. If she knew anything she would know he wasn't coming on her in an aggressive way and her acting terrified and trying to scare him when he's scared would scare him and in turn he would try to scare her. Right in front of the property too.

I honestly felt awful about it. But I was also mad at the lady for making the situation worse.

I was like 19 or so. Have learned alot myself since then but if my parents can be credited with anything it was teaching me to stand my ground with a strange dog and how to de-escalate the situation.

If that lady had instead turned around and ran I would not have been able to grab the dog so quickly and he most definitely would have chased. Don't think he would have came up more than a few feet, he was always protective of his territory and would have likely stopped a chase as soon as they went in a house or car or something. Would have easily caught up on foot tho.

I've had dogs do the same thing to me on walks and I can tell if they're scared or just barking to make me known or to keep me away. There's one that I made friends with. Barked like he was gonna eat me but I could tell by his posture he was just scared. Scared by some lady with spikey hair walking in front his yard. I squatted to look as non-threatening as possible and talked softly to him and he stopped barking and eventually came up to me with his tail wagging between his legs. I let him sniff me and he let me pet him.

Now I come by his yard and he comes up barking for me to pet him.

The entire time I was in front of him tho I had my hands between his face and mine. If he latched on to my arm I would have gouged that sweet little dogs eyes and punched it in the nose and ripped at his ears. Never had to do that and hope to never have to but I always am prepared to when coming up to an uneasy dog. Much more aware and cautious since I got bit by a frightened dog I cornered like an idiot.

He looked like some kind of begal mix.
