In both lights there are far too many assumptions about their behavior. Which often eliminates appropriate caution. Which is why people leave their newborns around unrestrained dogs.

That's fucking adorable.


It's not necessarily wrong to personify an animal, especially a mammal, especially a domestic mammal, as we have alot in common. Alot of people just don't understand the line of that personification.

Alot of people hate dogs and see them as evil because they personify them, because they expect them to think like human beings. People will punch eachother in the face for a perceived threat to themselves but are especially likely when it comes to defending their family. A dog will do the same. It's rarely the instinct of a hunter, usually only in cases of strays and packs will they attack people over territory or animals for food, in the case of a home bound or yard bound dog it's a protective instinct.

90%% of people I have ever met introduce a stranger into their home and to their dog the wrong way. It's okay if the dog isn't shy and is used to company. But in some cases things that seem normal to us are very abnormal and threatening to a dog and closed spaces make them anxious when encountering something new.


I also wonder how many of those bites happened to animal control after they cornered their dog.

Not nearly as many as what happens with an irresponsible owner I'm thinking. Those that don't socialize or train or exercise their dog enough or inappropriately expose it to unsettling situations.



I don't deny that some animals are irredeemably vicious. I am sad that the same mentality that leads to alot of those "accidents" is the one that has them banned and euthanized and convincing people they are dangerous animals that have no place in the home. It's 2 sides of the same coin and unfortunately it seems those 2 sides are the only ones that talk to eachother.

Littledotheyknow both agree that dogs aren't actually dogs.

This is my "bred to fight", randomly aggressive pitty mix. Hahaha. She has never bit anyone, even with provocation. I've seen her run away or come close to me when in times of physical distress. She can be aggressive in the fact that she loves to catch birds and lizards. It looks like there are explosions of birds in my backyard every here and there.

I really wonder how many people who love to spit all these statistics actually have owned one of the many breeds considered a "pit bull". If someone hasn't owned the breed, their input can only go so far in my mind. Everyone has the right to their opinion because it is their reality. But for all those people who use the "I've only been attacked by pit bulls" or "my friends male pit who isn't neutered is always getting in fights..." blah blah blah. The naysayers really should listen to the people who say it's nature vs nurture, especially to those who have credibility behind their statements.

There will ALWAYS be a demonized dog for the world to not understand. Ignorance is not going anywhere. We have all heard the stories about pit bulls. My parents generation heard about the chows and so forth. I have known and owned many Apbt's and a couple of Staffordshire Terriers. They are loving and have got me through very hard times in my life.

Yeah, that was kind of the underlying dark side of my puppy post,
it just goes to show that, even as puppies, dogs do not think of play the same as humans
how many people get bitten not knowing where the rough-housing lines are?

One of the troublesome things with larger breeds of dogs and children,
is that if a younger (1-3 years) dog starts bounding around in play and scares the child,
and the child runs,
the dog can be inclined to chase, tackle, and bite the child like another dog
unless trained otherwise

You really are a special kind of stupid aren't you?

I have an epileptic friend with two blue nose pits, they are certified service animals, not the bs kind you can buy papers for for 50 bucks.  They can alert him when he's going to have a seizure prior to having a seizure.  They had to be extensively trained to pass the test to become proper service animals, and would never hurt a fly. They stay by his side at all times, one male, one female.

I'm definitely not crying, no need to make assumptions. My female is not fixed and can be moody. But, that's just where understanding and experience come in. If a dog is growling or displaying a scared or defensive posture, guess the fuck what? You stay away or risk getting bit and becoming one of those statistics. That goes for any breed though.

You may be able to relate to this situation more though. Considering that cats and dogs typically don't get along, would it be far fetched to say that a cat would be particularly fucked if it could not escape a "ferocious" dog "bred to fight" Pit bull? Her other half is also one of those dogs that are considered dangerous and she has never had a problem with cats. With a breed so "inherently aggressive by nature", don't you think her demeanor towards cats would be totally different?

I know that people who have owned and own some of the "pit" breeds can attest to the fact that pits really are a mellow breed. They do have a lot of energy and like every dog can get territorial but so can any other dog.

My brother has a male pit bull. Blue nose American pit bull terrier. He also had that pit's mother for a time when he was a teenager living at home.

Unutered. Not well trained. Dog was a psycho because it lacked stability and exercise. She bit other dogs. She bit the pant legs of a skater down the road. She chewed through a wooden door and a chainlink fence because she had severe separation anxiety. She bit the ear of my other dog and latched on. She didn't give a shit if I kicked her and threw shit at her she would NOT let go until her daddy, my brother, came and showed her he was upset with her.


Her playmate tho, my orange tabby, she would get him and flip him with her muzzle and nibble his belly, never ever hurt him, while my cat would be shredding her face with his claws. Drawing blood. Her fucking tail would be wagging while she nibbled and rolled the cat with her face and he tore her ass up.


That's not unpredictable. It seemed like it then, to us kids, but we grew up to realize she had a poor foundation and inconsistent discipline. She was not socialized properly to other dogs. She was not trained well enough to stay in the pen or crate or fence she was put. We got a shock collar for her and that smart little bitch figured out if she got a good running start she could clear the fence with only a small shock.
She eventually went out and attacked a 9 month old Labrador. We gave her up after that to someone that could dedicate the time to her she needed.

Some time later she had puppies.
My brother got the last male of the litter. He too had horrible separation anxiety. They crate trained him. They established dominance over him as a puppy. Walk him daily. Play weekly. They play with him with stuffed animals by the toy "attacking" him instead of keep away and scold him if he goes for it as they're taking it, or submit him if he gets too excited. Because that teaches him it is NOT okay to play chase, at least not if mom and dad are around.

Anyway, that vicious male pit bull terrior pouts and hides behind my brother if another dog snaps at him. He's so anti-confrontational he will let another dog hump his face.
He's slipped his leash once or twice. Once while he was on his walk in the neighborhood and saw a mom walk with her 5 or 6 year old. He bolted and the mother ran in to her kid and, as terrifying as it may have been, the dog started giving them both obsessive kisses.

That's the most dangerous thing I've ever seen him do. He will drown you in kisses if you're not careful.

Crazy how I know hundreds of people with dogs, and 0 first hand accounts of a dog eating someones throat.  If you don't let your dog get into stupid shit, and feed it good food, it doesn't throw up.

I have had cats my whole life and they yak hairballs everywhere though.

Loved dogs all my life and have always had one.
Still to this day one of the most beautiful intelligent and we'll trained dogs ive come across was a pit almost like a behavioral beacon for me when training my collies.
I've also seen a pit rip the face of one dog and the jugular off another.

These personal experiences whilst nice to talk about mean nothing when talking about pits on a macro level.
Van nobody here is trying to personally attack you or your dog.

Anecdotal accounts together add up to an idea of collective behavior tho.



Since I mentioned it I am curious of how dog attacks are in other countries. I mean countries similar to the US that don't have loads of strays and packs of starving abandoned dogs and animal cruelty laws.

Cuz as far as a culture goes we seem to be one of the most violence prone societies in the "free world" and I'm wondering if that could correlate with our pets being more violent as well. Or if we actually manage to have less attacks than similar countries due to some factors I haven't considered.
