Practicality / ethical implications of plug spawn in live trees
    #6891560 -

Is it both practical and "ethical" to drill holes in live trees and place a few reishi or shittake plug spawn within? In terms of ethical issues, I basically mean violating the integrity of the tree.

Shiitake and reishi prefer to grow on dead trees. So there's not a lot of point doing it to a live one. Unless you want to kill it.

It wouldn't work. Reishi is a secondary decomposer that goes to work after several other species of fungi are finished. In nature, it's often one of the last ones, infecting trees that died decades earlier.

Shiitake can grow on fresher wood, but you don't inoculate live trees. The enzymes would fight off the mycelium.

What could you inoculate live trees with?

i think u could inoculate the roots of live trees with truffle mycelium, but i read it takes like 7 years to get truffles...it would still be sweet, when i buy land i'm definitely gonna look into it...

If the inoculation is effective, maitake would probably kill the tree over a couple years.

IMO is important to do not introduce new strain into the habitat.

Fuck....Maitake you say....do they kill trees by nature...would they inoculate my whole woods over time...that could be a very good cash crop....

i don't know about miatake killing tree's, i read in one of stamets books that miatake has been fruiting from this one tree for years and years...it doesn't say if the tree is dead or alive(that i remember) but doesn't miatake kinda coexist with a living tree same as lions mane?

they say that some mushrooms like not just wood, but all the other living organsms that live on it(hence why we pastureize straw)....so one would think that some mushrooms actually help a tree

Grifola is a faculative parasite. In nature, it consumes dead roots and some live tissue and effectively prevents obligant parasites from gaining a foothold and killing the whole tree. Nevertheless, Grifola consumes the roots, thus weakening the hold on the soil. Increased sway will break and kill more roots and eventually the tree will die. It could be as long as a decade.

I am about to find out what inoculating a huge live oak with lions mane will do. I have some spawn I have to use ASAP. Tried getting logs for almost a year now with no luck or help so screw it the tree is a target now. It is a massive oak my landlord refuses to spend his money on though it is destroying our roof, anything in the path of falling limbs and makes fall raking hell. Now it shall become my science project. Truly I hope it kills the tree so he is forced to get it taken care of. Hoping to get it inoculated today after chanterelle hunting, cleaning & cooking. I'll take pics and report back as often as I can.

I have seen lions mane grow on a live tree, so I also had the idea of inoculating some trees in my backyard with plugs, except not to kill them. Would be nice to eat fresh lions mane every year without hiking for miles.

I'm curious if fresh oak wood that was cut only four days ago and inoculated would kill lions mane mycelium in dowels? How long these antifungal enzymes stay and how to deactivate them faster?
