Reishi, Shiitake,Lions Mane spawn question

Is grain a suitable spawn for these or should I use wood pellets?

All of those species will grow on grain, and if you can do grain I think that would be the way to go. That way you can go to wood pellets, dowels, etc. with some nitrogen already in-hand, and further spawn or fruit from there.
It's certainly possible to just inoculate wood pellets, but I'd think you'd have to add some nitrogen, probably have to sterilize longer, and be more careful. Some peroxide methods might help. It depends a lot on how much you're going for, and how you're going to do it. A single qt jar of grain can actually make quite a few dowels:

My friend said he plugged an entire [young] alder with them. That same amount of grain wouldn't go nearly as far if he was trying to fruit reishi on shredded junk mail [current project :wink:
