spawn question
    #583620 - 03/19/02 06:45 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

so anywayz, i started 12 cultures of Hypholoma capnoides a couple days ago and I had some questions about spawn. Could i just use rye grass seed or rye grain as the spawn and transfer it to sawdust? i know sawdust is needed for fruiting but i was wondering whether to go with a grain spawn or a sawdust spawn, thats for your help!

Certainly...I would suggest rye berries over rye grass seed because the seed will take forever to colonize. Let me remind you that H. capnoides does not benefit from the additon of bran, so use pure sawdust. Are you planning on making blocks or fruiting logs? Keep in mind that a temperature range of 40-50 degrees F. is required for pinhead formation. Also, be sure you can ID H. capnoides because galerinas do look similar. To check, keep in mind that H. capnoides has a nutty flavor, is not bitter, and has a brown spore print.

thanks for all the great info, im gonna go with the rye berries and im planning on making blocks. i already knew about the temps, but thanks for that info anywayz. I'm 100% positive about the ID on them too, because I bought the dowels from FP and used those to make cultures. Thanks again!
