Hypholoma Capnoides spores and agar
    #14303773 - 04/16/11 10:42 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

This is my first serious attempt at agar culturing. I have read enough to know that agar can be used in jars. I am using 1/2pt jars with medical tyvec filters (a technique that has worked well for me in the past) but my kids ran off with the seal for my pc, so I am going to boil them BRF style in an open pot and the tyvec should keep out all the uglies.
(seeking opinions on this)
The print is a "smoky gilled wood lover," that I got from "the works." It is 3-5? years old (so I am prepared to fail miserably. Though I am still hopeful.)
I was going to post pics of the jars in the pot, but after shooting it, I felt kinda silly. It's not very impressive.
Any advice or tips on germinating older spores would be greatly appreciated.
Once I have something to show I will start a grow log and take lots of pics.
Thanks all

Hey, just seen this thread.
You better get back that seal... then you want to hydrate old spores properly, like making a spore syringe and leaving it for 24hrs before you proceed. H. capnoides spores may also require an acidic environment. Boiling some (conifer?) sawdust in the water you use to create your agar should help too.
