Kids on meds * 3

Kids on meds.

Adderall, Vyvanse, Amphetamines, Ritalin.

The problem with amphetamines, other than addiction, is that even if you take your pill like a good boy and don't get into abuisive patterns, even medical doses over time diminish your capacity to experience pleasure and undermine your higher brain functions. Some of the permanent damage meth heads get is happening to our ritalin kids and adderal teens.

One thing that is at fault is that almost all teachers are women, who subconsciously consider girls with their generally more calm behavior the model student and boys with their more unruly behavior, problematic. Boys arent allowed to be boys anymore,. If the push and shove and grapple each other its taken as aggression, and they have to go to the counselor and may end up mmedicated for not being a girl. Let the boys be boys!

Some of the best and brightest of the millenials will only later in life shine like they should have shone in their younger years, because in their younger years their uniqueness was medicated into zombie compliance, with some of the strongest psychoactive drugs in the arsenal - amphetamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, antiepileptics. Its a crime against our youth. Many of the best and brightest of our older generations were very unruly children who found themselves, and their genius, through the unmedicated hardship of their teenage years.

Kids never allowed to be kids, I hate to say it, oftentimes for the convenience of their parents and teachers and the cost effectiveness of the school rather than their own best interest.

It bothers the crap out of me.

It is a freaky thing these days giving kids so many meds. In my day the teacher could spank or even hit kids. Not saying that was OK but I didn't see a lot of unruliness in the classroom, only at PE or recess. I am so glad I chose to never have kids. I can't imagine trying to raise kids these days.

As a penis in a bottle...i have to agree with you.  It is absurd.  are you aware of dr. gabor mate's work ?

this whole thing has gotten so out of hand its not even funny - it went past funny to being very sad and terrible.

with family members who practice medicine and  who have been teaching for decades and a principle for decades and with cousins and family diagnosed as *insert anything* etc...its just for the kids that dont fit the mold..its justified via the parent saying I want my kid to get an education so he doesn't have to bus tables his whole life, even if its not good for his health in the long run etc.

To a degree I suppose its better than just killing the children because they arent fit or strong enough or smart enough or interesetd enough or behave enough to make it in a predefined kind of way - life in some older cultures.  But...atleast in the USA its insane.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procrustes

the practice of medicating behaviour into or out of individual human beings is..... our modern day form of the procrustes ^ myth.

Questionable ethics for sure.  Who knows how it effects the population as a whole when it comes down to passing on genetics that have been biologically tainted by years-decades of having been dependent on strong amphetamines and sedatives and anti-psych meds.

It used to be in ww2 that receiving amphetamines etc was a last resort of the strained solider risking his life if he was in dire straits - now its given to little kids...ughhh just thinking about the meso-limbic pathway disregulation being caused and the poor neuropathways being born and maintained in the brain of these kids over years on these drugs is disheartening and cruel to imagine - not to mention the new problems or disorders that will arise from that disregulation/dependence.  Not to mention the faulty information which is skewed to allow for the "theories" for behaviour as being because of organic damage or abnormality ...even when we know the brain adapts based on its past and current environment ina constant state of flux.

Sure there are legit cases, but not like we are seeing.  in a sense bc of the way alot of these drugs work - they , if you didnt have the diagnosis that allowed for it to be prescribed at first  + but you take the drug long enough = basically ending up with something that resembles the original diagnosis for what the drug is prescribed for...its the nature of the beast and so many do not see this because of their own egos.

Man my little cousin, whom I've always been close to, had been on adderall since he was like 6. His parents didn't let him play outside. They made him play video games and shit and basically isolated him. He developed a huge ass list of environmental allergies too. So ofc the good ol doc says he needs drugs instead of outside time with other kids.

By the time he was like 10 he just looked sick all the time.
He was short for his age.
They put him on growth hormones.
He was on all kinds of meds till he was like 12 or so.
I think the doctors recommend he go on antidepressants at some point and I think it was at this point where my aunt started to gather that he was not BORN a sickly child but feeding him a bunch of fucking drugs and letting him live in a sub-par over sheltered environment was probably what was making him sick.

He just turned 13 last year and he's looking a little better. My aunt exercises with him everyday. Biking, jogging, w/e. He's in baseball and boy scouts. Actually making some friends I'm glad to say. His mom's got him on a clean diet with very little processed bullshit. He's growing and actually getting some meat on him now. As far as I know he's not actively on anymore drugs at the moment. Just carries his epipen in case he has an allergy attack.

I think there are kids who have very serious disorders that may need to be treated with medication as a last resort. But it should be a last resort. Changes in diet and environment should be observed first.

Maybe discovering allergies and all that isn't good for the world. Maybe the weaker ones should die off so the stronger genes can survive? I don't have kids and don't want them. What a nightmare! I don't hate kids though.

I've been on meds since about middle school. I always had the option to not take them though, I decided to keep on them because I liked how they made me feel. So I guess that's a different situation but I don't feel like I was jipped of my childhood or anything

I think he developed so many allergies because he wasn't exposed to strange foreign things like grass as a young child.

Love my aunt but the was the epitome of crazy overprotective mother that ends up doing more harm than good.

I grew up in America as a 90s kids and I never did homework, like maybe a handful of times in my life, so all my teachers were convinced I had ADD/ADHD.  I got "tested" several times and every time they sent me back saying "no he doesn't have ADD, it's something else".  Sometimes I wonder what that something else was.  Pretty glad I didn'y get introduced to speed at a young age tho.

Is it really different than kids who get into drugs, and are self-medicated, and not fulfilling their potential?  Or does that not bother the crap out of you too?

That bothers me too of course, but meds are imposed and every day/all day. its a complete obliteration of your baseline state 24/7, unlike smoking a joint or even snorting some speed between classes.
Meds are mostly every day, all day.

I agree.

Our hyper competitive society convinces parents that early academic performance is paramount to the child's long-term happiness.

The logic is:
happiness = big money
big money = good grades
stimulant drugs = good grades
therefore
stimulant drugs = happiness

Instead of allowing their children to play, enjoy life, learn at their own pace and develop their own hobbies and interests. Parents are being scared to death that if their kid isn't the top of every class and pursuing some high-paying corporate hell of a life that their child is going to wind up a loser.

I agree this is a huge problem. Boys should be encouraged to play, learn and develop their masculinity so they can grow into young men. While girls should be guided into womanhood.

What's even more frightening is the evil, sick people that deny their child's biology and think that instead of helping their sons and daughters develop naturally that they can hack off their sexual organs and inject them full of hormones because "gender is a social construct."

Absolutely appalling

Some kids need medications. ADHD I feel there are better ways to deal with than meds & don't agree with the amps being prescribed. But some of the other things you mentioned... . Anti-epileptics..... that's not stifling uniqueness or forcing compliance. That's a necessity to attempt to preserve development, or some semblance of it. I don't think you get how devastating seizures can be. I do, because I treat a lot of kids with severe seizure disorders. They can halt child development in its tracks. I've seen 15 year olds at a 5 month old cognitive level because they have hundreds of seizures a day, and have since they were newborns. Yeah, the medications have side effects, and they're not always effective, but they're life savers.

This is a subject that kinda gets to me. I'm gonna try my very best to avoid giving my kids medications. Hell I avoid giving them ibuprofen and acetaminophen, and that's for colds and teething. Not really necessary, imo. Knocks them out too and that kinda creeps me out. My son needed surgery when he was a little over a year old and I had to give him morphine, an antibiotic, and I think another one was for irritation in his bladder because he had a catheter for a while. That was weird. Scary. And he needed it.. Couldn't imagine feeding my kids meds every day to make them conform to other people's idea of normal. Some kids probably genuinely need certain meds for those issues though - for them it's there, but it's not a permanent solution and it certainly can't be beneficial for their development.

That sounds really disheartening, tbh.. That's really respectable work. I suppose sometimes even if a medication may or may not have negative side effects that, the positives can far outweigh the condition it's treating.

Question - I've heard a fair amount about marijuana used for seizures, if that's something you or your patients work with, how does it stack up against pharmaceutical medications?

Antiepileptics are being used not for epilepsy but as mood stabilizers/sedatives to kids without seizure disorders.

That's some serious medication.

I feel like alot of the more dangerous or erroneous popular ideas come about by trying to simplify very complex ideas (like human psychology and sociology) for stupid people.

Not entirely true to say that gender is a social construct. It is true that gender roles are a social construct. The idea that girls have to do this and boys have to do that.
I personally think they should all be allowed to go outside and play and be fucking kids. They should all be involved in sports. They should all to to touch poke and catch frogs and turtles and shit.

We want everything to be simple and easy and its really hurt the last 2 generations (the one that is currently children and the ones that are young adults)

And more importantly parents and school teachers should take responsibility for children's behavior. They act the way they do because the adults aren't engaging and don't care enough to make learning fun and rewarding in a way that interests and intrigues a child. There are hurtles and developmental issues for probably half of all kids. What should happen is the parents and teachers figure out a way to work around it, to work the kid through it.

But education has become inflexible with standardized testing and shit. The teachers don't have time or room to work with children. Parents are working more average hours than the prior 3 generations. They don't have time either. And with media and doctors and authority being equally confused by media they honestly don't know how the hell to raise their kids.

We over stimulate children outside the classroom with flashy noise making toys, video games, and the internet... And then we expect them to calm down and sit and write letters and numbers on paper or read books... When they have TV and shit all the time...

I dunno. Seems like a common sense problem to me.
Society is constructing a mess that commands obedience without reason or reward. It is illogical and counterproductive to deny human nature in favor of pressing on constant outlined by the book hours of work and blind listening to the hours of work funded by business of others.

Re: Kids on meds [Re: Asante]

I consider it to be a really sad state of affairs, honestly. Others have said most of the points I was going to. Children have vulnerable brains and I don't think loading them up with dopaminergic stimulants in order to make them more compliant with an education system that is heavily biased towards females is fair. I consider off-label usage of antipsychotics in particular for sedation to be torture. That sounds dramatic, but they have some of the most unpleasant side effect profiles of any psychopharmaceutical. Giving that to a child who doesn't have the capacity to say no or even understand why he/she is being given such medication is quite evil.

I think it's worse when parents deliberately get their kid falsely diagnosed  with ADHD by doctor shopping until they find one who'll say yes and dose their kid with stimulants *exclusively* to improve academic performance. I think that's pretty abusive - good grades are nice and all, but it's so much more compassionate to allow a child's personality and interests to develop naturally as opposed to being a robotic hyperfocused calculator with stunted emotions.

I've also seen a correlation between ADHD children/teens and very low self esteem - they're not stupid and they realise the differences between them and other children (getting into trouble a lot, being medicated, frequent doctor visits etc). Sometimes they internalise this and see their behaviour, and thus themselves as "a problem", escalating into "THE problem" when this is far from the truth.

Natural interest and passion will take you a lot further than stimulants ever will, and has a lot less side effects and most definitely less comedown.
