While your sentiments have great meaning and truth, they do not address the issue of someone steadily increasing attacks to the site and us having to do something.

We can't sit back and do nothing.

Ive been reading about why the shroomery was attacked and all the post about who and why, It just seems like some losers out there really need some attention and sooner or later the bad karmas gonna catch up with them.

Ped, I have a rather Taoist predisposition to seeing the futility in escalating conflict, and I do agree with your ideals. I would much rather be as water, and dance around the stone, gradually wearing it down by subtle effect, than to try and smash it with another stone.

That being said, I cannot guarantee, that anyone who enables, solicits, or funds, such attacks against such a large population of innocent people, because of a few personal squabbles, should escape justice as defined by larger social structures which have evolved over much time.

Should a rapist be free to rape again? A murderer to murder? A burglar to burgle? No!

I do agree with you about our own personal attitudes, and I think all Shroomerites should strive for the high road in this situation. We will probably be down again in the future, and when this happens. Go outside and enjoy the coming spring -- the cheery cherry blossoms, the pretty girls in sun dresses, all of that good shit! :smile:

Largely, this conflict is not a true conflict, but an illusion in the mind of a few individuals. Eventually, they will come around, if not provoked further, but we must remember that anti-social crime is just that, and society has developed systems for dealing with those who are off balance, lack center, and lash out at others, to calm the angry voices in their own heads...

As staff of The Shroomery, our priorities are largely:

1) Keeping the various Shroomery services available for our membership and this community. This may involve channeling money into firewalls and other means before it can be spent on other improvements, features, and benefits. No biggie, at least we have it to spend now. :smile:

2) Continuing to make this the best web-site possible for our membership and this community. After we take care of #1.

3) The continual collection of data and intelligence, so that justice may ultimately be served, in the retirement of those who care more about their own personal issues than for the well-being of the many.

As members of the shroomery, your priorities, should be:

1) Pretty much what Ped said! :laugh:

2) To enjoy the coming of Spring -- especially, when we are down. :wink:

3) To continue to learn from the mushroom -- it has much to teach about flow, balance, and unity! :smile:

PS: I'm on shrooms right now, so if this response just seems all too flowery and philosophical for some of you... Too bad! As George Harrison once said: "That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!" :grin:

You must understand that everyone who participates in this community, even you, the member reading this right now, make 'attacks' against the shroomery every time you type shroomery.org or load a new page. There are simply too many connections to handle.

I did not mean to suggest that we should lay down in the middle of a highway and allow ourselves to be run over by burly men driving large trucks. I meant only to suggest that when approaching the solutions to this conflict, we should do so with an attitude of loving kindness, rather than one of angry vengence, hatred, or spite. If it's patience and kindness which motivate the preventative measures taken to protect the community, then it is ultimately this attitude which will prevail.

The greatest prevantative measure which can be taken against this type of harmful action is the direct opponent of that harmful action. The ICMP attacks against The Shroomery were intended not only to interrupt the operation of the site, but to plant frustration, hatred and confusion in the minds of our community, and especially in the minds of those responsible for the accessibility of our community. If we allow those feelings to dictate our response, then any preventative measure taken will be one that only escalates the situation, bringing satisfaction to those responsible for the attacks. Though, if we oppose the arising of those feelings by remembering the value of patience and kindness, the preventative measures taken to protect the Shroomery will be ones that do not cause us tension and strife, and do not solicit further attacks. This is the real victory.

In papaver's Taoist flavour,

Actually, you could even have some fun with this, if you take the emotions out of it. Get creative. I don't know how this type of thing works, these forums, and boards, but I'll bet someone smart would know how to get creative and make it not worth the effort to sabotage the shroomery.

So am I correct in understanding that it is highly probable that these attacks were aimed at the shroomery in order to attempt to move some of its traffic to another mushroom site?

Now that's just bad business!! especially when .ORGs are concerned

Somebody wants more traffic? I doubt it. I do think this hacker wants the shroomery to get less traffic.

It is very likely someone had their feelings hurt by the Shroomery. For some reason, I doubt it is another mushroom site (Although that would make a great movie of the week). Another Shroom .org site wouldn't endanger themselves just to damage the shroomery. Plus, thedarkunderbelly.com, SacredShrooms.org, Mycotopia.net and Nan's Nook have all been quite welcoming to Shroomerites during the Shroomery's downtime. Still, these sites don't seem very disapointed when the Shroomerites leave.

I even found the IP fix (To log on to The Shroomery this weekend) at SacredShrooms.org... sure, you can't type Shroomery without it being blocked out like a swear word at SacredShrooms.org, but they seem very welcoming.

Whoever is doing this wants to damage The Shroomery's ability to make money. More downtime will bother vendors. Too much downtime, and the shroomery loses vendors. Lose too many vendors, and the shroomery can no longer be self sufficient.

Someone is trying to hit this site in the nuts.
