Trip report poem
    #2397234 - 03/03/04 04:03 AM (20 years, 20 days ago)

I just thought I'd share this with you guys. I used to write a bit of poetry when I was about 14-16, then I quit a while, and after one of my first trips (last quarter of 2002), I wrote a poem about it. It's originally in my mother tongue (Dutch), so I'll list both the Dutch version and a translation - Dutch first.

"Wijdbeens op de verloren snelweg
werden we vlees der goden
de wereld stad der doden

Dit is het uur van zondaars,
stotterende profeten
filosofen, de wereld vergeten

Warme sparrenbogen bewaakten het pad
van gebarsten zigzagtegels en gedoode holten
Onder: het vervlogen vuur
Boven: de nacht, gesmolten

We ontmoetten er twee neven
de angst en de haat
bedreiding voor het leven
skeletaal gelaat

Een stille wenk
van vingers lang asgrauw
een klein beetje sterven
bij het vallen van de dauw"

Here's the English version for your convenience. I doesn't lend itself to translation very well, as some of the ambiguity is lost.

"Legs agape on the lost highway
We became flesh of the gods
the world city of the dead

This is the hour of sinners,
stuttering prophets,
philosophers who forgot the world

Warm arcs of pine guarded the path
of shattered zig-zag tiles and extinguished niches
Below: evaporated fire
Above: the molten night

We met two nephews there,
fear and hate
Life long threats
face of skull

A silent gesture
of fingers long turned to ash
just a little death
as the dew falls"

Tell me what you think, especially those of you who speak Dutch.

I wish I could read the original

Our quest for discovery fuels our creativity in all fields, not just science. If we reached the end of the line, the human spirit would shrivel and die. But I don't think we will ever stand still: we shall increase in complexity, if not in depth, and shall always be the center on an expanding horizon of possibilities.
