cleaning wild mushrooms??

Hi all, I'm new to the hunting forum but went hunting a couple times last year. But I was wondering do you guys clean your mushrooms? And if so how do you clean them. Any info would be great. Thanks in advance.

usually the term "clean" means just getting any of the earthy stuff that is on the mushroom just from being in the wild.  theres really nothing fancy about it, just get in there with your hands and get grass/dirt/etc off of em.  Then dry them and you should be good to go! :thumbup:

I usually take a toothbrush or some like item with me to brush shrooms off with, but I will soon be sporting a brand new mushroom collecting knife like this one

The more one handles a shroom after picking the more loss of potency and oxidation from human handling. I flick a little dirt off grassy shrooms and let them dry. Once dry I can rub off all the dirt and retain a lot of potency.

Yeah i don't use a knife, just my hands my fingers..

Basically the only thing i bring home are Cubensis and Copelandia.
-Basically every shroom in put into my bag i try to get off as much sand and cow-crap off of the base of the stems, i peel it off, in a downwards motion with my fingers.. i peel it off and then put it into my collection bag.

And mjshroomer is correct you must be very careful with the msurhooms.

But i have no problem damaging the mushrooms at the base of the stems if that is what it takes to get all the sand off, because once a shroom goes into the collection bag it's like finger-nails on a chalkboard to see someone put a shroom into their bag when there is a bunch of sand on them, , the sand gets everywhere and stuck into the gills and then eating the shroom with sand in its gills i just something i don't much like, or at least try my hardest to avoid.

During the summer-time, the buggies tend to live inside of the shroom-gills, so, with big cubies i first pick them and clean the dirt off the base of the stem, then flip the shroom over and give the gills a heavy breath of air from my lungs and watch all the bugs fly out of the shroom.. otherwise the bugs will be in the collection bag munching away at your harvest, and also once you get the bag home and start looking through mushrooms the bugs will still be there and they'll fly all over the house and what-not.
