Not sure on what the ID is on that mush but it would be verrry helpful in letting me and everyone else know where you live so we can try to help you.

Im not sure on the ID of you're mushroom, but I could tell you that its not hallocinogenic, and most likely not edible... :frown:

If you have a sony dsc, like I do, you can use the Macro mode (the flower symbol) to take closeups. The main thing is that you still have to be like a good 6 inches from the subject. If you really want to get a closeup, go about 8 inches and zoom 100% into the shroom! I use the high flash level as well.

I have the same camera as you and can get pictures of high quality:

Your descriptions are improving rapidly.

Given your description, it sounds like a Cortinarius, subgenus Myxacium. Cortinarius are not saprophytes, but form mycorrhizal associations with trees. So it should have been growing near a tree of some sort (was it?).

Cortinarius are also among the most difficult mushrooms to ID to species. Almost none of the professional mycologists I know will make a guess beyond genus (without lab work and a copy of the monograph).
