what's the difference between vermiculite and perlite?
    #2348172 -

it turns out I have some leftover "ready gro hydro organic" soilless media that's mostly perlite with a little coir and "beneficial microbes." it's designed for plants but I was thinking of nuking it and casing with it. how would perlite casings differ from vermiculite?

What i would do is mix in some worm casing, two cup of bone and blood meal per 5 gal, a cup of epsom salt per 5 gal get some hps and some beans and grow some weed. That stuff is no good for shrooms.

"What is perlite and how does it work?

Perlite is made of small pieces of extremely porous volcanic rock. If you look at is closely (microscopically) you'll see that it looks like swiss cheese with (relatively) huge holes. When water is added, it is wicked into these pores of the perlite. This porous structure then serves to slowly evaporate the water back into the air. The huge surface area in the micropores of the perlite helps the water evaporate forming a vapor of tiny droplets which tend to stay well in the air, as opposed to the bubbler and humidifier methods which have large droplets which tend to condense. This evaporation process takes a while, which is perfect for our purposes, since we want to prolong the evaporating process as long as possible. "

Vermiculite
Vermiculite is made from a naturally occurring mineral - mica.
Crushed mica containing water is heated and expands to a volume several times greater than that of the untreated mica.
Vermiculite is able to hold several times its own weight in water and it gives the substrate an airy structure.
Vermiculite is available in several grades, the middle and the middle-fine grade are most suitable for cultivation purposes

yes you can use either vermiculite or perlite or a combination of them with peat moss or coir as a casing mixture.

Vermiculite holds more water and has a high CEC( it holds and releases nutrient ions).
Perlite holds very little water, but offers good pore space to a otherwise compacted casing soil.

I have used both peat:perlite, and peat:vermiculite. both work very good. After all, it is the peat that is holding alot of water as well.

Both work so use what you have available.

As a Substrate admixture(PF TEK) vermiculite is what you want. But perlite loosens up dense substrates very well. I use it in manure jars for Copelandias.
