I've used it with success..without supplementing the growth is
quite slow though...Good part is that the molds don't grow on it
so it can be used without sterilizing first - like the cardboard..

yep, H. capnoides, grew slowly, the culture probably has bacterial contams, the sawdust works well.

Yes, molds grow on cardboard also, but you have to try really
hard if you want to succeed well in it.. :wink:

You can buy hardwood pellets that are meant for woodstove too..I wonder if they're treated with anything?

Home Depot, or whatever large lumber or hardware/outdoor outlet you have down there. Up here, they only sell it during the cold months. I can't find it this time of year.

I have used wood fuel pellets made of firs.
These must be very similar to yours.
The species I have successfully grown on that substrate were Pleurotus eryngii, Hericium abietis, Shitake and Flammulina velutipes.
Although I think it might be an advantage to supplement it a bit - gives better flushes ...

Yeah I've tried supplementing mine also - this last time with coffee grounds and maple chips. Works well for oyster at the very least  :thumbup:

My new source for woodlover substrate base are the pellets supplied by Traeger for their pellet-burnng grills.  They have a wide selection of hardwood types available, and I beleive they explicitly state that there are no glues, additives, etc. in their products--  just sawdust.  Also, they were recently running a deal whereby if you bought 4 bags of pellets, you got a fifth bag of alder pellets for free.

I've used alder exclusively so far.  I put the pellets in a paint strainer bag, soak them in hot water for about 10 minutes until they are sawdust.  Then I drain & squeeze until I have the right water content, and supplement with oat bran and some calcium sulphate a la Stamets.  Then it's into spawn bags and into the autoclave for 2 hours at 15-17 PSI.  It's worked great for lion's mane so far.  Maitake has also voraciously colonized it, and I'm about to induce fruiting on those so cross your fingers everybody.  :thumbup:

Those'd be a little pricey, for me. 10 clams plus shipping per 40 lb bag...ouch. I'll stick with supplementing my 40 lb fir bags for $3

I'd buy it for maitake though; I've never grown/tasted it and need to do both.

I supplemented with oat bran, and spruce needles.

Wet the sawdust till just a little water can be sqeezed out then add your bran, mix it up and let it sit a couple of hours. Put it in jars or bags and pressure cook.

Shipping is included in the price of all Traeger pellets, 40lb or 10lb bags. They go a long way, too, don't forget.

hmmm, you are very lucky. like you, i decided that the logical best way forward was to copy Stamets in GGMM and get myself going with supplemented red alder. i couldn't find the pellets on that website, not that i'd have been keen to have something heavy shipped across the atlantic.......

i've not had bag success before, but once i find a good alder source in the UK, i'll be following you down this road.

Hmm... some of these responses are turning up blank. Was it concluded that Feline pine would be a suitable would pellet? I already buy 20lb bags for my cat (it's an excellent litter) that lasts me months. When I compare the price per pound of feline pine to the price/pound of fuel pellets, feline pine seems to be significantly cheaper. The only difference really is that there are many types of wood pellets when buying fuel pellets whereas Feline Pine is, well, supposedly just pine. What are other peoples  thoughts on the subject?
