Shiitake pining * 1
    #14719134 -

Ive seen some blocks that produces lots of pins and subsequently, shiitake mushrooms.

How does one achieve that? By adding more Grain Spawn?

Or is it strain specific?

With more pins, does it mean smaller mushrooms?

A good pinset is definitely strain related.  However, it's possible for the grower to screw up even a good strain, or try really hard and still get nothing with a crappy strain.

Less nutrients at fruiting time will deliver more pins.  Use low supplementation and a low spawn rate.  Add bark and shredded straw to your substrate blocks.  Do a proper cold shock, and most importantly, rinse off all the metabolites when you strip the bags off.  Slap the blocks around when rinsing them off too.  Physical shock is a major pinning trigger.

"Less nutrients....."
Grain Spawn is nutrient itself, and instead of adding less, i add more so that colonization is faster and there is less chance for contamination to compete.

However, adding too much will also contribute to mutants for the 1st flush.

The way i see it, it is better to be colonized faster than contamination taking over.

Now, im getting all confused, as i want more pins. All other factors,i'm doing accordingly as you mentioned.

Is there other alternative ways, or i can't have the best of everything as im also experimenting.

Thanks.

As I learn more from commercial growing, I'll update advice to reflect it.  Use minimum bran and minimum grain spawn if you want more mushrooms.  Also wait three to four months before stripping the bags off.  I'd suggest making each batch a bit different so you can find out what works best under your conditions.
