Making sawdust spawn from Traeger grill pellets

Posting this to help others a little who are experimenting with Traeger pellets.

I prepare two large spawn bags at a time using the following recipe:

* 4 cups Traeger pellets (alder preferred, I use hickory if it's all that is available)
* "Dash" of gypsum (i.e. a little bit grasped between the fingers)
* 6 cups warm water

Procedure:

1. Place pellets into a DRY 5 gallon bucket. The bucket must be dry so that step 3 will work properly. If you use something much smaller than a 5 gallon bucket, you are going to be very frustrated. The pellets expand a lot.
2. Add gypsum.
3. Swirl pellets in the bucket vigorously to break up and distribute the gypsum (this is helpful if the gypsum is caked).
4. Add the water all at once.
5. Give the bucket a good shake one time, to toss any dry pellets under the surface.
6. Let sit for five minutes.
7. With two hands, reach into the bucket and knead the pellets (which are now completely loosened) into sawdust. Take care to really break every bit of it up, and get an even moisture level.

This hits the right moisture level very easily. Your results may vary depending on how your pellets have been stored.

How much does a bag of pellets cost.  I remember looking at buying one of their grills, but changed my mind when I saw the price of the pellets.

I have seen 15-20$ but the grills are awesome! Tossed a turkey on for thanksgiving smoked all day came out perfect and all i did was set it and forget it.

The pellets are definitely not the most cost effective thing out there... But right now they are all I have available. And the quality is very consistent.

I tried Traeger Alder with great results. My wife kept telling me "they better produce golden mudrooms for that price". I told her I was not growing that species. She did not get the joke.
