Colonizing Oak/Pine sawdust mixture
    #11668701 - 12/17/09 01:55 PM (14 years, 3 months ago)

So I've located some free sawdus, but it's a mixture of oak and pine. I know oak is great, but pine...not so much.
Does anybody think it's possible to make sawdust spawn with such a mixture?

I've got a random sawdust mix from a custom carpenter here...he uses oak, maple, cherry, pine, everything and I've never had a problem.

I've also used pine woodchips (among others) in my mixes without issue. You should be ok. If your curious, maybe just try 1 bag with a couple cultures to see how it goes over so your not wasting much time and energy.

Are you using it as substrate, or as spawn? I think you might be able to get away with pine for either use, but there is an important difference between the two uses.

My personal (UNTESTED, UNPROVEN) opinion is that it is possible to use a great variety of woods for spawning that would give poor results if used as a final fruiting substrate. If the mycelium can colonize it and leap back off, it should work fine as spawn. How well it produces nice big fat mushrooms when used as a substrate is a different story.

I have not used pine but I have used Doug Fir with somewhat satisfactory (but still kind of underwhelming) results as a fruiting substrate. As spawn, it was more than adequate, the mycelium was quite happy to leap off of it.
