The more and more I learn about the details behind this shooting, the more bizarre this story becomes.

For starters, there is no way the shooter was a member of ISIS. He apparently pledged allegiance to several conflicting groups--Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and ISIS. These are groups that are in conflict with and are at war with each other, you can't pledge to them at the same time!

Then, it turns out his dad was a TV show host on some political channel in which he claims to be the President of Afghanistan.

So I know that there's this whole movement where people can choose to be whatever it is they want to be, and give themselves whatever label they desire. Buuuuuuuuut I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that President of Afghanistan is one of those things you sort of need universal consensus on to claim.

You guys should definitely watch that Univision interview with his gay lover, it's quite interesting the things he had to say. According to him, Omar felt used by the gay Puerto Rican community, and thinks his motives for the shooting were revenge-based.

I think when they use this term, they are talking specifically about mass shootings that were committed by 1 lone person (not a military battle or a government entity), in U.S. history.

If you watch the video you will see that his father was crazy, and was probably a big motive and reason behind the shooting.

The shooter told his gay lover that if his father ever found out he was gay, his father would commit an honor killing and murder his lover... to restore his son's honor.

The shooter probably came out as gay to someone in the Muslim fundie community and they told him to rectify his behavior for god and all that.  Or maybe he was hoping the virgins in heaven would be little boys.  What a pedophile!

I used to think that this was an overused and oversimplified explanation of homophobia but 10+ years of observation have taught me that it is most often true, if not always true. I have seen enough virulently anti gay pastors and congresspeople get busted for soliciting gay sex in public restrooms and from male prostitutes and interns to be wise by now. Hatred is sparked by the deferral of desire.
