Intellectual curiosity, or mental masturbation, as someone else referred to it. As far as defending one's views, I don't ask that people prove their views to be true beyond a reasonable doubt. I merely ask that they explain anything that seems inconsistent with reality as we know it. I don't ask everyone to do this, as some people are too attached to their beliefs to question them, but I hold the people in this forum to a higher standard than that.

Now, about these Martians: I heard they have weapons of mass destruction. Is that why Bush is planning to invade the planet? Or do they have oil there?

I'm here because I enjoy the conversation. Shroomery's S&P provides and entirely different intellectual atmosphere than I've found in other places. I suppose that suggests that I am here to learn, not only that but to share. Perhaps to teach and be taught simultaneously and to find individuals with whom I can mutually grow and expand ideas.

entertainment, mostly.
S&P is damn good reading :thumbup:
but I don't take things here too seriously, or personally

I also learn quite a bit,
and sometimes I even share my own thoughts
and call out BS if I see any
if people see these things in terms of "attacking" or "defending"
that's not really my problem

I am here to learn.  That's the only reason I join forums, is to see what I can learn.  I have learned a lot so far.

One really great way of learning it to have to defend your position.  That is why I like skeptics.  I don't see skeptics as "assholes".  I see them as a "necessary evil".  :evil grin:  :lol:

When I make a statement, it's with the unspoken acknowledgement in my mind that someone could say "WTF are you talking about???"

Then I have to defend my position or buy a different one, if mine isn't holding up.  My mind has been changed on a couple of things since I've been here. 

So, I learn.  I learn new things, mostly.  But I learn also whether I buy my beliefs or not.  I also learn about me, by how things that are said affect me.  Where are my soft spots.
